Courtois open to Chelsea stay amid Madrid links

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is open to remaining at Stamford Bridge despite being strongly linked with a move.Courtois, 26, is reportedly a target for La Liga giants Real Madrid with only a year remaining on his contract with the Premier League side. But Courtois, who helped Belgium secure third place at the World Cup Saturday, said he may yet remain at Chelsea.

"Now I'm going to talk to my agent to see what the possibilities are. All options are open for me. I may also stay at Chelsea," he said, via Marca ."People always complain that players don't comply with their contracts, but maybe they do."I don't think they will keep someone with my qualities on the bench, even if I don't sign [a new contract]. But maybe [staying] is possible, because I like it in London."

Chelsea and Belgium team-mate Eden Hazard cast fresh doubt over his club future on Saturday, hinting at a move to Real Madrid along the way.Courtois was signed by Chelsea in 2011, but spent the next three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid as he developed into one of the world's best goalkeepers.

Kane key to England culture, says supportive Southgate

Gareth Southgate praised Harry Kane's leadership at his first World Cup amid debate over the England captain's failure to fire when it mattered most at the tournament.Tottenham striker Kane is poised to take home the Golden Boot despite managing just one shot on target - from the penalty spot against Colombia - in the knockout rounds.

His struggles continued in the third-place play-off on Saturday, including scuffing an opportunity to equalise in the first half, as Belgium recorded a 2-0 victory.

Southgate defended Kane's final outing in Russia and was quick to highlight his off-field influence with England, who made the semi-finals at a World Cup for the first time since 1990."It would be wrong to judge any player on today's game, if their energy levels were short," Southgate told reporters."I think [Kane] has captained the team exceptionally well. He’s led the culture that we're trying to create."

Southgate made five changes for the game in St Petersburg in a bid to provide fresh impetus after the gruelling extra-time loss to Croatia on Wednesday. The former Middlesbrough manager admitted it was "tough" to lift his players' spirits, although he stopped short of suggesting the fixture should be scrapped in future.

"It's not for me to decide whether there should be a play-off. We wanted to try and get a medal and all of the staff wanted to finish on a high," he said.

"The effort was there, the quality of play at times was there up to a point but we've played a better team, far ahead of us in their development, probably the best team [Belgium] have ever had. We're not at that stage yet."

Effenberg: I'd prefer Mandzukic over Neymar

Former Germany international Stefan Effenberg said he preferred Mario Mandzukic to Neymar and feels the Croatia star would be worth €200 million (£177m/$234m) if he was younger.Mandzukic, 32, has helped his nation into the World Cup final, including scoring the extra-time winner against England Wednesday. The forward has scored twice at Russia 2018, having enjoyed another fine season at Juventus.

Former Germany and Bayern Munich star Effenberg said he had no idea why the Bundesliga giants sold Mandzukic in 2014, while revealing he preferred the forward to Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar."I never understood why Bayern sold him," he wrote for T-Online ."Mandzukic is one of three three best strikers in the world for me. He is working for the team and also scored the goal against England.

"If he were not so old, he would have a market value of €200m. I would prefer him 10 times better than a Neymar."

Mandzukic has scored at least 10 goals in his past seven seasons, going across the Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A, and will have the chance to add a World Cup title to his list of honours with a win on Sunday against France.

Martinez hails 'perfect' Lukaku's World Cup campaign

Roberto Martinez lauded Romelu Lukaku as the "perfect" striker for his Belgium side after the Red Devils beat England 2-0 in the World Cup third-place play-off.

Lukaku missed several chances to put the game beyond the Three Lions in St Petersburg before he went off on 60 minutes, as the Manchester United striker finished the tournament on four goals, all of which he scored in the first two group fixtures.

And despite an impressive display against Brazil in the quarter-finals, Lukaku failed to spark against Japan, while he was anonymous throughout much of the semi-final defeat to France.

However, Martinez was quick to praise the 25-year-old, who he managed at Everton from 2013 to 2016, insisting goals were not the only aspect of Lukaku's performances in Russia that should be analysed."I think Romelu had a fantastic tournament. I am delighted with his contribution, his contribution goes further than just scoring goals," Martinez told a news conference.

"I appreciate Romelu's mentality, he's a winner, I don't think he has any worry about playing in big games. He's a perfect number nine for us. "His power, his capability of scoring goals and moving defenders around and occupying defenders, I couldn't be happier with what he has done.

"He didn't start the tournament to be top scorer, he didn't come here for himself, he came here to help the team and that is a real sign of his maturity and he's got one of the brightest futures in Belgian football at such a young age.

"He has done incredibly well to be in the starting line-up [against England]. It was a really difficult game against France, he had a couple of knocks and was carrying a bit of a pain, but he wanted to be part of the team and to help."
