Thierry Henry eyes manager role after quitting pundit job

Thierry Henry has quit his role as a television pundit to focus on a future in coaching.Henry was an assistant to Roberto Martinez as the ex-Everton boss guided Belgium to a third-place finish at the World Cup, having juggled the role with his on-screen duties for the past two years.

But the former Arsenal and France striker has elected to walk away from the small screen after completing his UEFA Pro Licence through the Football Association of Wales last year."Over the last four years I have had some extremely rewarding coaching experiences in football," he tweeted.

"These experiences have only made me more determined to fulfil my long-term ambition to become a football manager."It is with sadness, therefore, that I have decided that I must leave Sky Sports to enable me to spend more time on the pitch and concentrate on my journey to achieving that goal."I would like to thank everyone at Sky for making me feel so welcome and at ease throughout my time with them and I wish them all the best for the future. Great memories."

:(Man Utd and Ajax agree £14m Blind fee as defender nears exit

Manchester United and Ajax have come to an agreement over a fee for Daley Blind, the clubs have announced.

The Red Devils will receive £14 million (€16m/$19m) for the Netherlands international, with add ons possibly bringing the fee up to £18m (€20.5m/$24m).Blind is expected to sign a contract with Ajax that will run until 2022.

The 28-year-old versatile defender and midfielder joined United in 2014 after impressing with Netherlands at the World Cup under Louis van Gaal, who was behind his €18.3m move to Old Trafford.

His versatility made him a dependable asset for Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho afterwards, playing in a variety of positions including centre-back, left-back and defensive midfield. But, since Mourinho's arrival, Blind has seen his playing time substantially decrease with the Portuguese coach seeming unsure as to his best position.

After making 35 league appearances, all starts, in Van Gaal's final year at the helm in 2015-16, he would play just 23 Premier League games under Mourinho in 2016-17.

That was reduced to just seven appearances for United in the Premier League last season as a result of injuries and being out of favour, with four of those appearances coming from the start.United kept clean sheets in all of his starts, but with just one year left to run on his contract, a sale had been mooted for several months.

A former Ajax youth academy prospect, Blind made his debut with the Eredivisie side in 2008 and went on to play 143 times with the club. He was part of four title winning teams with Ajax. While Blind's time at Old Trafford did not see any league titles, he was part of sides that won the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar said told Omnisport on Sunday that he was excited about the imminent arrival of the fan favourite."I think Daley is a fantastic player," he said.

"He's multi-functional, can be a left-back, centre-half and a defensive midfielder. For Netherlands and for Manchester United, he played many good games... it would be a great addition for Ajax to have a player with the quality of Daley to fit in the team."

'I've been a prisoner of my own challenge' - Wenger concedes 22 years at Arsenal was a mistake

Arsene Wenger concedes that spending 22 years in charge of Arsenal was a mistake, with the Frenchman feeling as though he became “a prisoner of my own challenges”.Having worked so hard to rebuild the Gunners in his image, the long-serving coach found it difficult to sever ties with the club.

There were plenty of opportunities for him to walk away, with Real Madrid and England having made several attempts to secure the services of a proven performer.

Wenger also faced fan protests towards the end of his reign, but he eventually departed on his own terms at the end of the 2017-18 season. The 68-year-old admits that he should have probably made a fresh start some time ago, rather than clinging on in north London, but his passion for a high-profile job kept him coming back for more.Wenger told RTL when asked to pick out the biggest mistake of his career: “Perhaps staying at the same club for 22 years.

“I’m someone who likes to move around a lot, but I also like a challenge. I've been a prisoner of my own challenge at times.”Wenger guided Arsenal to three Premier League titles, with his iconic ‘Invincibles’ side of 2003-04 negotiating an entire English top-flight campaign unbeaten.

He also reached the 2006 Champions League final, but saw European dreams crumble as a succession of last-16 exits were followed by two finishes outside of the top four in England.FA Cup success helped to paper over the cracks at times, with Wenger leaving north London with seven winners’ medals from that competition.

He is yet to take on a new role ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, with the latest reports suggesting that a man who left Nagoya Grampus Eight to take the reins at Arsenal in 1996 could soon be heading back to Japan.

Alderweireld unsure of Tottenham stay after 'unjustified' omission

Toby Alderweireld admits that he does not know if his future lies at Tottenham after an impressive World Cup.The central defender was a mainstay of Belgium's run to the semi-finals, and played 90 minutes as the Red Devils sealed third place, beating England 2-0 in the play-off.

However, the 29-year-old was used sparsely by Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino last season, playing just 14 times in the Premier League as he struggled to return to fitness after a hamstring injury.

Alderweireld has subsequently been linked with a move away from the club this summer, with several reports claiming that a contract dispute played a role in his omission from the team.

Manchester United have been credited with a serious interest in signing the defender, but Alderweireld says he does not know where he will play in 2018-19, though he has criticised his amount of playing time last term."I really do not know anything yet. In my head I just go to Tottenham. We will see," he told Nieuwsblad.

"I was very focused on [the World Cup]. I wanted to prove something again. Show that the period before the tournament in which I did not play – for whatever reason – was unjustified.

"I wanted to show that I am still the same Toby as in November."I was happy that I could still play four or five matches for the World Cup. I immediately had a good feeling."Physically there was no problem, because it was just my only major injury from my career. I spent only three or four months [injured] in my entire career.

"I have to touch wood, but I cannot complain about that. I'm glad I could come back in this way."Spurs finished third in 2017-18, three points behind second-placed United, with Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez regularly deployed as their starting centre-backs.Alderweireld's current contract expires in 2019.

Hazard must trade Chelsea for Real Madrid in order to become the next Ronaldo - Burley

Eden Hazard needs to follow Cristiano Ronaldo’s lead and “propel himself to the next level” by trading Premier League football at Chelsea for Real Madrid, says Craig Burley.

The Belgium international has been linked with a move to Spain for some time, but has seen speculation regarding a big-money switch stepped up over recent weeks.Hazard has continued to leave the door open to a new challenge, with the 27-year-old having spent the last six seasons in England.

Former Chelsea midfielder Burley feels the time is right to make a fresh start, with Portuguese superstar Ronaldo having shown when leaving Manchester United for Madrid that La Liga can be a perfect springboard to becoming the world’s best.Burley told ESPN FC: "At the end of the day, he has been there six years.

"It has been very fruitful for him, changes are afoot at Chelsea, Sarri is a very good coach and plays attacking football."But can any player really turn down Real Madrid if they come knocking at the door?

"And you are a top player and want to go enhance your game like Ronaldo did.
"When Ronaldo left United, it propelled him and I think it is time for Hazard to propel himself to that next level."

Hazard has made 300 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 89 goals. He has claimed two Premier League titles during his time in west London, along with FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League triumphs. His latest comments on his future have hinted that he will soon be heading elsewhere, with the Madrid rumours fuelled after helping Belgium to a third-placed finish at World Cup 2018.

Hazard told reporters: "After six wonderful years at Chelsea it might be time to discover something different."Certainly, after this World Cup, I can decide if I want to stay or go, but Chelsea will have the final decision."You know my preferred destination."

:cool:Man Utd launch new home kit for 2018-19 to commemorate Newton Heath foundations

    iUZmrL9.jpg

Manchester United have launched their new home kit for the 2018-19 season.
United's bold new shirt features black stripes along the midriff and on the shoulders in a commemoration of the founding of the club. The stripes are described as a "train track graphic" by the club's official press release, which is a reference to United's original name; Newton Heath (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) Cricket and Football Club.

The club were founded in 1878, 140 years ago, and started off by playing against other rail companies. They changed their name to the famous United we know now in 1910, eight years after entering the First Division. The red and black shirt will be accompanied by black shorts and red and black socks.

“There are many great moments in this club’s fantastic history, and none more important than the year the club was founded, back in 1878," United's group managing director, Richard Arnold, told the club's official website."This shirt from Adidas pays homage to the year we were founded, and marks 140 years of footballing success.

“The train track graphic on the shirt is a reference to the origins of the club, when the team was known as Newton Heath (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) Cricket and Football Club."Again, Adidas has shown how innovative they are with their designs – taking a moment from the past and reshaping it for supporters into a jersey which I am sure the fans will love.”

The new jersey also features the club’s first shirt sleeve sponsorship after United signed a multi-million pound deal with US brand Kohler. The Premier League changed its rules at the beginning of the 2017-18 season to allow clubs to adorn sponsors’ logos on their sleeves, but United were one of a number of outfits not to take up the opportunity during the campaign.

But, last week, they announced that they have made an agreement with Kohler, a kitchen and bathroom specialists, with the partnership meaning the company’s name will be displayed on the strips of both the men’s and brand-new women’s teams.

United will wear the kit for the first time during their pre-season tour of the United States.Adult replica shirts cost £64.95, while a children's shirt can be bought for £49.95. The long sleeve version is priced at £74.95. Authentic shirts cost £109.95.

Liverpool open talks with Roma over £62m Alisson deal

Liverpool have opened talks with Roma over a £62 million ($82m) deal for goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Goal can confirm. The Reds are desperate to land the Brazil international and are prepared to pay a world-record fee for a keeper in order to do so.

Crucially, they have received encouragement from Roma that the Serie A side are willing to sell. Liverpool had feared they would be priced out of a move for the 25-year-old, and that they may have been beaten by Real Madrid, who had also expressed an interest.Chelsea are another club to have been credited with an interest in the goalkeeper over fears that they may lose Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid. There is, however, a growing confidence that a deal between Liverpool and Roma can be agreed, with the Serie A side already believed to be eyeing up replacements.

Paris Saint-Germain's Alphonse Areola is thought to be on their radar, while highly-rated AC Milan No.1 Gianluigi Donnarumma is another to have been mentioned.Alisson was identified as Jurgen Klopp's preferred target last season, with the Reds boss aware that none of Loris Karius, Simon Mignolet or Danny Ward have nailed down the No.1 shirt at Anfield.

Karius's errors in the Champions League final in Kiev, and doubts about the lasting effect they will have on his confidence, have reintensified Liverpool's efforts to recruit Alisson, while Ward is said to be impressing Klopp in training and could get a chance to stake his claim if a deal does not get finalised.

Now, the obstacle is agreeing a fee with Roma, who are keen to avoid a repeat of last summer when they sold Mohamed Salah to Liverpool at what now looks a ridiculously low fee.The Italian club have made it clear that they are not prepared for the same to happen with Alisson, and Goal understands they could settle for a fee of around €75m (£67m/$88m).

The player's agent Ze Maria Neis, meanwhile, had earlier 'liked' an image on Instagram that depicted Alisson wearing a half-and-half Roma-Liverpool shirt - fuelling suggestions that a deal is not far away from completion. There are outgoings for the Reds to concern themselves with too, with Harry Wilson all set to join Derby on Tuesday on a season-long loan deal.

Goal understands Klopp's side are also weighing up offers for Ryan Kent from both the Championship and Scottish Premiership, and Sheyi Ojo is also attracting heavy interest from English football's second tier.Promising youngsters Rhian Brewster and Taiwo Awoniyi, meanwhile, are both set to sign new contracts this week.

Liverpool play Blackburn in a friendly on Thursday, which Ward is set to start, and fly to the USA for a three-game tour on Saturday morning.
