Alba returns to Spain squad as Luis Enrique bows to pressure

Spain boss Luis Enrique has called up Jordi Alba for the team's upcoming November internationals, after leaving him out of his first squad back in September.

The two men worked together for three years at Barcelona between 2014 and 2017, winning the Champions League and two La Liga titles, but the 48-year-old manager snubbed his former charge in his first action with the national team.

Alba played no part in the September and October fixtures against England, Croatia and Wales, despite numerous figures in the game and colleagues of the defender criticising Enrique's final decision.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos described him as "one of the best in the world in his position", while his Barca teammate Gerard Pique publicly called for the Spanish chief to change his mind, as he stated: "I hope that Lucho rectifies the situation and brings Jordi Alba to the national team."

Enrique spoke to Marca ahead of naming his latest squad and fielded questions about the possibility of including Alba, responding frankly: "Jordi Alba? He's at a very high level, but has always been like this."The Barca star has now seen that standing recognised by being restored to the national team ranks.

Alba's inclusion is not the only big news to come out of this latest announcement though, as in-form Borussia Dortmund striker Paco Alcacer has been omitted, while Chelsea's Marcos Alonso has also been left out despite his strong displays in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid midfielder Isco returns to the international fold after injury and Real Sociedad centre-back Diego Llorente has been called up two years since his last international cap.

Spain will first take on Croatia in the UEFA Nations League on November 15, before a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina three days later.

    FULL SPAIN NOVEMBER SQUAD LIST:

    Goalkeepers: Pau, De Gea, Kepa

Defenders: Otto, Azpilicueta, Diego Llorente, Ramos, Hermoso, Inigo, Gaya, Alba

Midfielders: Sergi Roberto, Ceballos, Brais, Rodri, Busquets, Fornals, Saul

Forwards: Suso, Rodrigo, Aspas, Morata, Asensio, Isco

Portugal squad announced with four recalls but Ronaldo remains absent

Fernando Santos has recalled four players, but Cristiano Ronaldo will play no part in Portugal's final two UEFA Nations League fixtures later in November.

Juventus talisman Ronaldo has not appeared at international level since the World Cup, with the national coach granting him an extended leave of absence.Reports suggested he could return to face Italy and Poland, but Santos has honoured the joint decision not to consider the forward until 2019.

"The only thing I think about Ronaldo is that he should win the Ballon d'Or," Santos replied when asked about Portugal's all-time top scorer. There are recalls for defenders Jose Fonte and Raphael Guerreiro, along with midfield pair Andre Gomes and Joao Mario.

Everton's Gomes returns after being cut from the 23-man squad that lost to Uruguay in the last 16 at Russia 2018, having impressed with his recent displays in the Premier League.Portugal need either a point or a win against Italy to finish top of Group 3 in Nations League A.

Santos' side beat the Italians 1-0 at home back in September, before picking up a 3-2 away win against Poland the following month and will be favourites to progress as group winners.

At Manchester United, we're used to scrutiny - Herrera

Heavy scrutiny at Manchester United comes with the territory and both players and managers must learn to deal with it if they want to succeed, according to Ander Herrera.

Manager Jose Mourinho has not taken kindly to the criticism directed towards him following what after seven games was United's worst start to a league campaign since 1989.

Prior to the comeback win over Newcastle reports suggested Mourinho would be sacked by the United hierarchy, regardless of the result.

Mourinho claimed after the success, which has triggered a run of four wins and draw in the last six games, that even "if people don’t like Brexit it is my fault".

But whether it is Mourinho at the helm, or whoever follows him at Old Trafford, Herrera says questions over your position after a defeat is something to be expected at such a big club."When you play for Manchester United, the biggest club in the UK and one of the biggest in the world, you have to get used to that [attention]," Herrera said.

"I have been here five years and with [Louis] van Gaal every day the papers talking. When Mourinho came, the same and we won titles. One day if another manager comes, they will speak so it's something we are used to coping with."I think Manchester United players need to have the personality to cope with that.

It's true when our Premier League opponents lose games, the papers don't talk that much but when we lose they do."The analysis of Mourinho's position will never have been greater than when United travel to Manchester City on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola's Premier League champions finished 19 points ahead of United last term, and City will get another chance to exert their authority over their local rivals this weekend.

United arrive at the Etihad Stadium having beaten Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday and with a victory under their belt from last year's fixture, but Herrera says recent history counts for nothing."I don't like to compare situations. It's a new game, a new situation," the Spaniard added.

"Hopefully, we can win. It's true that they are the favourites because they are in unbelievable form but this is Manchester United and you never know what can happen."

Martial earns France recall after Man Utd resurgence

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has been recalled to the France squad following his fine form for the Red Devils over the last month.

The 22-year-old starlet has scored five goals in his last six appearances for the club and seems to be improving with each passing week, with the Old Trafford outfit securing three successive wins in all competitions.Martial was omitted from Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps' squad for the 2018 World Cup and has been fighting for a return to the national team ever since, with his wish finally granted on Thursday morning.

The United superstar has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, amid reports of a difficult relationship with manager Jose Mourinho, but the Portuguese coach has made him central to his plans in recent weeks.

A starring two-goal performance during the Red Devils' 2-2 draw against Chelsea in October was the catalyst for change before he also managed to hit the winning goal against Everton and a crucial equaliser against Bournemouth.Along with Martial's inclusion, United team-mate Paul Pogba has retained his spot in the squad, while Chelsea's Olivier Giroud and N'Golo Kante have also been selected.

One surprise omission from the team is Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette, who has been a key figure for the Gunners during their 13-match unbeaten run.

Meanwhile, Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy is back in the fold after missing out in Septemeber and October through injury and Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele is included again in the absence of Corentin Tolisso.France will face the Netherlands on November 16th in the UEFA Nations League before a friendly against Uruguay four days later.

Mourinho urged by Nani to adopt Ferguson mentality at 'different' Man Utd

Jose Mourinho is a “great manager” and capable of delivering success at Manchester United, says Nani, but the Red Devils are markedly “different” from the attacking team which thrived under Sir Alex Ferguson.

A rebuilding project at Old Trafford is still in progress at Old Trafford following the departure of an iconic manager back in 2013.David Moyes and Louis van Gaal failed to convince during forgettable spells at the helm, with the baton passed to Mourinho in the summer of 2016.

He delivered three trophies in his debut campaign, but has found the going a little tougher since then and has been forced to fend off reports of rifts within his camp this term amid inconsistent performances on the field.Former United star Nani believes positivity will be returned in time, with the Red Devils needing to take lessons from the past as they build towards the future.

The Portugal international told Sky Sports: “I hope they keep up the good results and that United have a good future.“It's different times, a different coach and a different culture I think. Different players, a different mentality, and you can see the attitude is not the same.

“Before [when I was at the club], sometimes we didn't play good football but at the end, we showed that we could do things that other teams couldn't. The last 15 minutes [of games] was just Man United. It was attack, attack, attack. I remember the fans singing that!“But they still have great players, they still have time to work on it. They have a great manager, so I hope in the future they will get back to their best.”

Nani, who left Old Trafford in 2015, has seen his career return him to his roots at Sporting. His most recent outing for them saw him skipper the side in a Europa League clash with Arsenal, with that contest seeing his former United team-mate Danny Welbeck suffer a serious ankle injury.

“It was a very sad moment," Nani said of an unfortunate injury sustained by a man he knows well.“I feel very sorry for him. He is a great person, a great lad and a good friend. When that kind of moment happens in the game you feel very sad.

“I don't know what to say. I just want him to recover well and I hope it is nothing serious but you can see something happened there, so I wish him all the best and a very fast recovery.”

Mourinho claims City are 'untouchable' ahead of Manchester Derby

Jose Mourinho has claimed that as a footballing business Manchester City are "untouchable" ahead of his Manchester United side's meeting with the Blues on Sunday.

The Portuguese takes the Red Devils to the Etihad Stadium following three successive wins in all competitions and buoyant following their late comeback victory over Juventus on Wednesday.City, meanwhile, have scored 12 goals in their last two games, though a series of allegations regarding the club's finances have dominated the build-up to the weekend's blockbuster derby clash.

Having refused to comment on the claims earlier in the week, Mourinho was again asked about City's dealings and alleged Financial Fair Play breaches.

And though the ex-Chelsea boss was keen to suggest that he remains focused on the challenges Pep Guardiola's side face on the pitch, he did offer an opinion on City's business dealings since being taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group.

"It’s difficult for me to answer because I focus on my job," he told a press conference. "I focus on the four lines, focus on football, so if you want to speak about their football potential we can speak, and football potential starts with investment."After that, of course, there is a quality of the work, of the organisation, I think that is untouchable.

"But what is behind, I cannot say. But in this moment I have only to think about football, and to think about football is to think about Manchester City as a football team there.”Mourinho bringing up City's investment could be construed as a message to his own vice-chairman Ed Woodward and the United hierachy, with the 55-year-old having previously shown his unhappiness at the club's lack of spending when compared to their local rivals.

Failures in the transfer market have been cited as a primary reason for the Red Devils' struggles this term, with United sat seventh in the Premier League table after 11 games.

And despite their improved recent form, Mourinho is firmly aware of how difficult a task his side face in taking on the league leaders. He added: "We are going to try. I cannot say we are going to be successful in our motivations, in our desire, but we played two difficult matches away against two very good teams - Chelsea and Juventus - and we managed to get good results.

"Even if the good results were not in our pockets, the performances were there, the positive attitude was there, so we are going to try, but City are a very powerful team.

"If we draw the gap is still nine points, if we lose it’s 12, so I don’t think that is the way to look at the match."We have to just think about the match, is difficult enough as an isolated event, if you want to put that match into the context of where we are and where we can be.

"I want to play it as an isolated match, a difficult match against a difficult team, but they will also think it’s a difficult match for them.”

Mourinho could welcome Romelu Lukaku back into his side after the Belgium international missed the wins over Bournemouth and Juve with a hamstring problem.

Man City star Sterling signs £15m-a-year contract extension

Raheem Sterling has signed a three-year contract extension with Manchester City, the club have announced.

Sterling is now tied to the club until 2023 after agreeing a lucrative new deal that could earn him as much as £300,000 per week.City had been trying to renew the England international’s contract since last season but only reached a break through in the past few weeks.

The 23-year-old had been linked with a move to Real Madrid but has now committed his future to City for the next five years.“I’m delighted to sign," Sterling said in a club release. "My development here has been incredible. I felt from the minute I got here it was the right choice for me. It’s really paid off for me and I’m really grateful.

“Every season you come in you want to do better than your previous season. You want to try and develop and get better.“With the facilities we’ve got here there’s no reason not to. With the coaching staff and the players we have in this team it’s the perfect environment to develop and get better.”

Sterling is in his fourth season with City after joining the club from Liverpool in 2015.The England international has established himself as one of the Premier League's top attacking players, and put together a career year last season as City won the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

Sterling scored 23 goals and added 17 assists in 46 matches across all competitions in 2017-18, and has continued that form into this season with seven goals in 14 games in all competitions.“This is a significant moment for the club," Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain said.

"Raheem has improved dramatically in the past two seasons and is now one of the Premier League’s best attacking players. His statistics tell their own story.

“He’s quick, strong and excellent in front of goal – everything a modern-day forward needs to excel.

“We’re all delighted he has committed his future to City.”

'Martial can be better than Hazard' - Man Utd star branded 'world class' by Ince

Anthony Martial can be “as good, if not better than Eden Hazard” after proving his “world-class” pedigree at Manchester United, says Paul Ince. The dynamic frontman has always been highly regarded, with Louis van Gaal having invested £58 million ($76m) of faith in his potential back in 2015.

Martial netted 17 times in his debut campaign, but he has struggled to find his spark on a consistent basis since Jose Mourinho inherited the reins.

Regular spells on the bench have done little to aid his cause, with questions having been asked of his ability to deliver when required and his long-term future at Old Trafford.

Ince believes a welcome return to form over recent weeks should bring an end to those debates, with a man who missed out on World Cup glory in Russia now back in the France squad and offering enough to suggest that he could become the finest deep-lying forward in the Premier League.

The former United midfielder told Paddy Power of a frontman who still has plenty of improvement to come: “No team will want to face Anthony Martial right now. He’s playing like the player we all knew he was.“And it’s interesting to see that now Mourinho seems to have found a team and formula that works, the results are coming in.

“He’s their world-class attacking player, the one that can do something special and make things happen when you most need it.“He’s only 22, and if he carries on in this form, he’ll be as good, if not better than Hazard.”

Martial has some way to go before he can claim to be as influential as Chelsea talisman Hazard, but time is on his side.He is five years younger than the Blues’ Belgian star and brings different qualities to the fold, with his game all about pace, direct running and a keen eye for goal.

The target has been found five times in his last six appearances, with more of United’s play going through him since the Red Devils were forced to tweak their plans during the injury-enforced absence of out-of-sorts striker Romelu Lukaku.

Guardiola expects punishment if City broke financial rules

UEFA and FIFA will act if allegations of financial impropriety made against Manchester City prove accurate, according to manager Pep Guardiola.

The reigning Premier League champions entertain rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, having scored six times in each of their home games against Southampton and Shakhtar Donetsk over the past week.Events away from the field have proved potentially more problematic.

German magazine Der Spiegel made a number of claims against City in a series of four articles, which are based on documents purportedly attained from whistleblowers Football Leaks.

Der Spiegel's reporting claims Sheikh Mansour's City regime have topped up multi-million-pound sponsorship deals with Abu Dhabi companies, using their owner's fortune, in order to meet UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) stipulations.

Last Friday, when the latest round of Football Leaks stories emerged with allegations that City were cut a favourable FFP settlement when they were punished for overspending by UEFA in 2014, the club declined to comment on "out of context materials purportedly hacked or stolen from City Football Group and Manchester City" and claimed "the attempt to damage the club's reputation is organised and clear".It was a topic of discussion for the City boss before the Shakhtar game, and Football Leaks was again on the agenda at Guardiola's Friday news conference.

"If they want to undermine what we have done, no problem," the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss said when asked whether his achievements at City would now be tarnished in the eyes of some observers."We [the City squad] live our lives and our process and what we are doing - it stays in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

"After that, opinions are opinion. I trust a lot the club and I know the people [in charge]. If there's something wrong, we'll be punished. FIFA or UEFA have to say if we were wrong."If we were wrong, we accept it. But I hear what my club said to me and I trust them a lot as well."

Another strand of the Football Leaks allegations related to major European clubs, including City being earmarked for a breakaway "super league".

Bayern Munich were identified as key drivers behind the idea – something the Bundesliga club and their chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge have strenuously denied.

Guardiola, a La Liga, Bundesliga and Premier League winner as a coach, still believes Europe's domestic divisions have considerable value."I don't have an opinion on that [the super league reports]," he added. "I would like to know the ideas but for me local competitions, Premier League and La Liga, are so important.

"We cannot deny the local leagues and their history but I don't know, I don't know the idea."

Lozano: I hope God gives me Premier League chance

Mexico and PSV star Hirving “Chucky” Lozano hopes God will allow him the opportunity to play in the Premier League.

The forward had been linked to a move to England even before joining the Dutch side from Liga MX club Pachuca in the summer of 2017.A debut season which saw him score 17 goals and add eight assists in the Eredivisie did nothing to lessen talk of a Premier League transfer.

This season Lozano has not slowed down, already netting eight times and adding four assists in just eleven Eredivisie clashes. He’s also added another goal and assist in the Champions League.

And Lozano did not downplay his desire to eventually get his opportunity in the English top-flight, telling ESPN he thinks it would be “fabulous” to get the chance to feature in the Premier League.Specifically, Lozano is hoping for a shot at one of the league’s top clubs."I hope that God, some day, gives me a shot at playing in the Premier League," Lozano told ESPN after his club’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham at Wembley. "I like it very much.

"I think the Premier League is great. I think that it would be fabulous to play with any of the clubs, but I would love to play for one of the big clubs. I hope that God gives me the chance."PSV’s hopes of making the knockout stages of the competition came to an end with the defeat against Spurs.

Handed perhaps the most difficult foursome of the group stage, Lozano admitted it was a hard situation for he and his team-mates but that they needed to learn from the experience."The truth is that our group [which also includes Barcelona and Inter Milan] was a complicated one, with great players and great clubs," he said.

"We fought hard at each match to try to do our best. It is a pity that their last goal went in after all that rebounding, but that is football. We have to keep improving and keep learning a lot from these beautiful tournaments. It's a wonderful experience.

"My takeaway is that I have gained a lot of experience and a lot of learning. I think I've enjoyed it to the max and I've given my best, and that is the most important thing."

A place in the Europa League knockout round is not yet out of the question yet, and, in addition to his Premier League dream, Lozano is also hoping for some divine intervention when it comes to their chances of finishing third in the group.
"We are going to give it our best shot over the next two matches. I hope that we get a little help from above," he said.

'Man Utd a much better team without Lukaku' - £75m striker shouldn't start derby even if fit, says Ince

Manchester United “look a much better team” without Romelu Lukaku, says Paul Ince, and should avoid recalling the Belgian for a derby date with Manchester City even if he is fit.

The Red Devils have been without their £75 million striker for two games now, with a niggling knock seeing him drop out of the side for meetings with Bournemouth and Juventus.

Jose Mourinho’s men have collected 2-1 victories from each of those outings – both away from home – with Alexis Sanchez chosen to lead the line after being moved inside from the flanks.

Ince believes United have been forced to play “a different way” without the option to go long and feels that approach will serve them better when pitched into action against reigning champions City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The former Red Devils midfielder told Paddy Power: “Even if Lukaku is fit, Mourinho would be mad to play him in the derby.“There are questions around whether Romelu Lukaku will be fit, but even if he is, Mourinho would be absolutely mad to play him.

“The results are plain to see.“Alexis Sanchez was much improved against Juventus on Wednesday and it’s no coincidence that there was no Lukaku present.“And, in general, when he hasn’t played, United look like a much better team.”

Mourinho has conceded that Lukaku, who is without a goal in his last nine appearances, is struggling for confidence at present, with Ince adding: “Without him, rather than booting in a long ball and hoping for the best, the United players are forced to play down the sides and get men in behind.

“No Lukaku has forced United to play a different way. And I’d go as far as to say it’s exciting to watch, they’re playing proper football again! They’re playing what I would call the United way.“You can’t deny his goal scoring record, but there are certain balls which the midfield have been attempting now he’s not in the team, and there’s no way they’d have done that with him there.

“Sanchez, [Jesse] Lingard, [Anthony] Martial and even [Marcus] Rashford are all looking for those types of balls.“It’s those kinds of players which will cause Manchester City trouble on Sunday, not Lukaku.”

United will make the short trip across Manchester this weekend sat seventh in the Premier League standings, nine points adrift of table-topping City.

:D'We are both good guys' - Guardiola happy to bury Mourinho rows

    uGFIdC2.jpg

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola described old foe Jose Mourinho as a "good guy" ahead of this weekend's Manchester derby.United boss Mourinho has clashed with Guardiola numerous times over the years, with their previously intense rivalry dating back to when they coached Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

Mourinho was widely assumed to have been annoyed by Barca's decision to appoint Guardiola over himself in 2008 and the pair had a number of fractious encounters during their time together in La Liga.

A Clasico clash provided the nadir when Mourinho poked a finger into the eye of Guardiola's assistant Tito Vilanova during a touchline fracas. But since they took charge at United and City the relationship between Mourinho and Guardiola appears more cordial, with the Catalan happy to avoid the rows of the past.

"Thank you so much. Thank you," Guardiola said when asked if he was pleased the pre-match focus was not placed on the perceived battle between himself and Mourinho."At the end we are both good guys, more than you expect. It's much better, believe me."

United cross Manchester on Sunday following successive comeback wins, a 2-1 triumph at Bournemouth followed by a stunning Champions League victory at Serie A giants Juventus by the same scoreline.

Juan Mata's free-kick got United back on terms after Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring, with Leonardo Bonucci's own goal in the 89th minute then earning United a famous victory in Group H.

"No team wins in Turin in the last nine years, how strong Juventus are," Guardiola said of United's eye-catching result.

"They had a problem for 10 minutes after Cristiano's goal but they were so stable with a lot of commitment, aggressive without the ball. A few weeks ago at Stamford Bridge [against Chelsea], one of the toughest places, they almost won."It's always complicated. In our history of Manchester City it's hard to beat United and they beat us more times but it's a good rivalry and a good chance for three points.

"We will try especially to have a good game. We'll speak with the players about what we guess will happen and suggest what we should do to win the game."We have to play good, only one challenge in football is to play good, and have more chance to win. The top teams, you cannot imagine and think about it, play amazingly for 90 minutes and they don't have chances."

United also came from behind to win at the Etihad Stadium in April, denying City the chance to clinch the Premier League title in the Manchester derby with a stunning 3-2 victory.

"The first 75 minutes in the last game, I'd like to play the same, top for 75 minutes, but United showed us last season they need 10, 15, 20 minutes to create a lot of chances," Guardiola said.

"The sensation when they have the ball with players in front, wow, they have incredible talent in front and the middle. You have to defend deep and well, defend crosses well because they are so strong and better than us at set-pieces.

"Bring our game and control as much as possible, be clinical - that's the game we will try to do."
