yup designing something entirely new takes years of R&D and costs a shit ton of money. You can't do it overnight. And I think they have to be distinct with their designs to escape from patent problems. If a patent they really need is owned by an US company, they are back to square one.
But every billion dollar company has contingency plans. From the way they've been speaking, they expected this kind of a thing would happen someday. So they might have something up their sleeve.
But in the end everything comes down to the user. If they reject it, they're done.
If my knowledge is correct about this whole ban thing(correct me if I'm wrong), even if huawei makes an entirely new device with their own engineering with their own new OS & app store, they still can't make apps for services offered by US companies like all the google services, Facebook, twitter, etc.
I think in the near future they'll lift this ban and everything will come back to normal. US is just showing off their power and control. But if US chooses to go forward with this then it's going to affect the whole world.
