By looking at some of the comments, it's interesting to know the definition of 'engineering' by their own terms. I sense some traditional age old so called rich and poor class mentality here. Here's is what I've found out by just a simple Google search.

"Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs. Many engineers develop new products."

So if anyone has some common sense to apply the generic 'engineering' definition to concepts and practices of software development, then it will become obvious that learning a language is in fact the application of those engineering principles to get the job done. One cannot simply learn some variables and loops to solve a problem without understanding its principles.

As far as using other people's code, there's a thing called "Don't reinvent the wheel" if you've not heard it before.

Lol engineering, learn a language and become an engineer. That's why IESL doesn't computer sector as engineering discipline.

And In Sri Lanka people still do have the mindset that being a Engineer or a Doctor make them higher class people and all others are lower class. People can be so educated but also can be so much dumb at the same time .

The so called engineers (except Software Engineers, since people doesn't believe them to be engineers) who have a IESL membership are thinking that they only have the right to be Engineers since they studied a degree program from a state university.

according to you, a person who has been graduated with an engineering degree and IESL is an engineer but Dennis Ritchie , James Gosling,Ken Thompson are not engineers because they had been worked in the computer science field with the programming language, WTF logic
