There are many advantages in using a nas Compared to cloud.

* Unlike cloud when you decide to stop paying one day your data will still be with you

* Accessing files locally is much more faster than cloud

* You can raid your HDD if you worry about losing your data

* You have more control over your data and privacy

* You can do local streaming using (faster than cloud)

* You can even operate Nas without internet

those server boards consume quite low power. i'm using supermicro-x9scm. many says idle power consumption is around 40-50W

If you have an old PC, the cheapest solution is to get FreeNAS installed. Costs only for Hard Disks, if you need more you can attach PCI Sata card and more ports. No need to have a monitor, mouse, keyboards after initial setup. power cable and network cable is enough. Use with a good UPS

How much do plan to invest on this so called NAS?

Is this comes with hard disks? only the enclosure I guess :-/

I will still say that it is a stupid idea. Why waste time and money when you can get someone else to manage it for you and take care of redundancy. But then again it is the individuals choice. So good luck
