Try Linuxmint Mate . Its a ubuntu base distro but much lighter than ubuntu with windows like interface. all of my office and myself using it for 7+ years now without any trouble

I would say go for basic ubuntu without trying too much fancy stuff.
Bad experiences that I had with linux:
- Some fancy looking distro (dont remember) had a wifi issue
- Mint has issues with external monitors

I would like to suggest you 3 distributions from 2 families.

A -- Debian Family
(1) Debian (parent distribution)

B -- Arch Family
(2) Arch Linux (parent distribution)
(3) Manjaro (a child distribution based on Arch Linux)

OR ------------------

C -- Red Hat Family
(4) Fedora (Based on Red Hat Linux)


----------------------
If you new to Linux, just stay with most popular distributions of these 3 families.

Personally, I always like to go with the parent distribution of each family instead of their child distributions.And I suggest you to do the same.
The parent distribution is always stable and less bugs than the child distributions.
