Yes... That's because no vaccine guarantees you of 100% immunity against the disease. Moreover all Generation-1 vaccines are based on the original Wuhan virus. So all of these current vaccines have reduced efficacy against the new variants. Hence the "Breakthrough" infections arise. However, the current vaccines are able to reduce the hospitalizations and the death rate.

We have to move onto Gen-2 or Gen-3 vaccines or an anti-viral drug. That's the only way out of this. Sadly this will take more time. Not before 2023.

What we need is an "Universal Covid Vaccine" that is variant proof.... I have posted details on the mechanism & the development of these. But these are on Phase I.
The current vaccine efficacy is quite unpredictable. Recent US studies show that many over 65 years old lose antibody levels much sooner than expected.

I wouldn't say sorted out... There are many viruses around that we still do not have vaccines against. With Covid and the way it spreads, many around the world would be gone.... dead... China will manage better than the rest of the World. They have strict adherence to the rules and the authorities are spot on, immediately blocking your door from outside. They know how to contain and isolate.
But probably we will adjust our lifestyles to live with it. People would die and everyday testing will be a routine and there will be lot more will pray for a vaccine or a drug - there will be a lot less anti-vaxxers.

I have mentioned here before the last time with SARS we were bloody lucky. The virus mutated with a 29 nucleotide deletion in ORF8 - making it more virulent - but at the same time it lost the ability to aggressively infect humans. That's how SARS went away. This time there seems to be no such luck with the mutations.

Even with vaccines viruses are hard to control. It took the Polio vaccine 30 years to control the disease.... There is still polio and with Covid because of delays in polio vaccine delivery, it has raised it's ugly head again.

There are parts of the virus that do not change and stay 96% the same across the entire Coronaviridae family. But sadly none of the Gen-1 vaccine makers did not target these. They targeted the S-protein (the Spike). That was a big mistake but at that time nobody thought the virus would mutate this way. That created the major flaw in the vaccines.

The Fusion Peptide (FP) remains the same across the variants and recently the scientists in Stanford found well conserved parts in all the variants in the RBD & NTD which can be targeted simultaneously for more efficacy. But the development of drugs or a vaccine is far away.

Humans will not be wiped out with this. The other danger is that Covid can pose indirect problems. The rodents like household rats and other animals who are in contact will carry the virus and it might give rise to another bad one. The scientists now have to keep a watch on human-livestock-wildlife interface to identify potential harmful zoonotic pathogens.
