Those guys don't believe in an in an open economy; they still have a 1950's Soviet Communist mindset. I can give you a simple example: during the Gota's regime, people believed that he would do something to uphold law and order and enhance the economy, but actually none of these happened. Even more, Gota decided to implement some of the of the worst economic decisions that almost took us into famine. Gota banned importing turmeric and other consumer goods, believing that this would be enough to encourage production here in Sri Lanka. But he forgot that our production costs for consumer goods are so high that we cannot compete with our giant neighbors. Indians can sell their crop here with prices that include shipping costs, taxes, middlemen's cut, and still lower than our own goods. so that a closed economy will incur such a such a terrible state that we will seek foreign food aid within a few years. Gota's little experiment gave us a fair warning about complete closed economy, so beware!
