Yes... Long gone are the good old days. Some areas stink. We see the difference as we are visitors. Probably those living there have got used to the deterioration.
Even other places are becoming worse. Last May, I rented a car from San Francisco airport. They offered me a near new Toyota Camry Sedan and asked me where I would stay. Told the lady that I am with a friend of ours in Palo Alto. She told then it's fine. Asked her why, and she came up with if you stay in the city part the car inside the hotel park. Because they remove the catalytic converter and send these to Mexico. There's a wait time of three months for the converters with Toyota. So rampant is the theft. Homelessness have grown and petty crime is up. I haven't been in SanFran for nearly six years. I dropped by there because of this friend and that's where our flight made a stop-over from Cancun. We drove up to Big-Sur and stayed away from the capital for a week and on the last day before the departure stayed in San Fransisco just a few miles away from the airport.
