Kelani River Flood Situation Update — 05.00 AM, 29 November
Most of the water is now passing the Hanwella area and rapidly flowing down towards Colombo.
No major rainfall upstream.
Glencourse exceeded the 2016 peak of 21.9 m earlier. Hanwella was around ~10 m during the 2016 flood, and we have now passed that level.
Nagalagam Street recorded ~7.65 ft (peak) in 2016. We are highly likely to see similar flooding levels in Colombo as this water moves downstream.
URGENT: Colombo Mayor Vraîe Cally Balthazaar has issued an urgent evacuation notice for residents of Mattakkuliya and Sammanthanapura living in high-risk areas along the Kelani River.
The Colombo Municipal Council has opened community halls and reception centres for those relocating. Residents are urged to move to safer locations immediately and to take only essential items and important documents with them.
