I believe it's a political campaign, in our part of the world to make juniors obay the seniors, due to seniority and not performance..

It was a very good programme. In that programme they built a collective sense in the future students, and motivated them for a better university culture. However, that wasn't liked by the current government party which is why it was branded "army training" and kept disrupting it.
Yes it was totally a politically implemented programme, but it didn't teach them politics or brainwash with political doctrines. It was purely English language, leadership, and skill building.

The actual reason why the JVP and other such parties didn't like it was that the students were more likely to stand up against ragging, after being together a month and getting aquatinted with their batch. There, those patties would've lost all their frontline pawns.
