The Uttarapathakas (a rival sect) maintained that even unintentional killing amounts to ānantariya kamma. At the Third Dhamma Council, Ven. Moggaliputtatissa refuted this for the reason that the Uttarapathakas could not quote a sutta from the canon to substantiate their proposition. (Dhamma Wheel)
So in the Kathāvatthu, the position that unintentional killing = ānantariya kamma is listed as a heterodox, refuted view — the very position Rerukane Himi holds. The orthodox Theravāda position at the Third Council was the opposite.
Where Does Rerukane Himi's Position Come From?
The commentaries — specifically the Aṅguttara Nikāya Aṭṭhakathā (Buddhaghosa's commentary) — do maintain the Uttarapathakas' version, i.e., that unintentional killing of parents IS ānantariya kamma. (Dhamma Wheel)
So Rerukane Himi's position is based on Buddhaghosa's commentaries (Aṭṭhakathā), not directly on the Tipiṭaka itself. This is a significant distinction in Theravāda scholarship.
