NEW: There is a possible pneumonic plague outbreak in Siberia, Russia’s far eastern region, after an accident at a BSL-3 lab
One lab worker, Daria Shipilova, is confirmed to have died after coming into contact with the bacteria. FSB units were seen accompanying ambulances to quarantine those who had been in contact with her.
In total, nearly 200 people have been put under mandatory quarantine for precautionary reasons. Symptoms take about 3-7 days to show, and if left untreated, the disease has a near 100% mortality rate among adults.
Pneumonic plague is a severe, fast-moving lung infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia Pestis. It is the rarest yet most dangerous form of the plague because it can spread directly from person to person through airborne respiratory droplets (sneezing, coughing, etc.)
