    Hi,
Attached pic shows some where around bamba flats as seen in google maps - map view.

(Sorry pic quality very poor . Google maps was running in a SE k750 and was snapped in a hurry and sent over. In the phone itself the map and text were quite clear).

Alas, as u say, it is not navigatable but perhaps sufficient just see ur location.
Well in colombo city, still some small roads missing, amd other places even just outside, roads and names not in google maps yet :( . Hope things will improve in the future.

    I would like to know:

In the GPS phones u mention and that u r using, will I be able to see my position *marked* on the correct place (in the correct road :) ) in a google map view as shown in the pic (in the pic there is no marker).
Assume there is software shipped with the phone or 3rd party software to do this? i.e. interface phone gps rcvr to google maps - map view ?.
(Didn't get time to digout a detailed review on the gps features of the phones yet in the net)

    I ask bcos two reasons:

-once I saw a s/w running on a laptop connected to a gps receiver, that showed only the google maps satelite view only of the neighbourhood of ur position without any indication of the exact spot - one had to buy the pro version of the s/w for that feature.

-couple of years back saw a s/w (laptop connected to gps rcvr) that showed real time navigation while driving around and was following a pre traced route. (no map). When there is tree cover accuracy dropped to abt 40m and with parellel adjacent roads one could not say whether in correct road or not! Of course clear view of sky gave abt +/- 10m. Heard accuracy will depend on the clear view of sky as well as the chip used in the gps rcvr/gps phone.

Btw a friend mentioned India has launched a gps waas sat. Supposed to increase accuracy very much. Don't know operating yet or signal receivable in SL. Anyone has any idea abt this or received a signal on ur gps phone or other gps rcvr ?

    thanks.

Well... DIalog and other mobile operators hava a map of colombo. When the GPS receiver is connected the real time navigation is quite accurate but there are few roads missing in their available map set. (For example that map doesn't have the baseline road stating from HighLevel road. Instead it shows a road starting from Kirullopone town- the old road).

Nyway I do have all those maps as bitmaps. The size is quite high coz of the resolution. But i didnt get the time to research on how to put those maps into a navigation software.

Sri Lanka is not yet updated compared to the features other countries offer in GPS navigation.

    mobile phones with gps

after having read what you all have said bout gps phones, man, maybe you should forget bout using a mobile phone, for one, your already on the internet, and know your way around the internet, so how come you couldnt find a working gps map of srilanka ?.

the internet is so vast, but finding the right information is hard but you will find it.

suggest you do a search again for gps maps for srilanka, forget mapsource and all that stuff, they simply dont work even with lots of tweaks. one person suggested garmin, and he/she is on the right path,

response to 'someone can make alot of money making gps routable maps in srilanka,' has already been done, and i can point you in the right path to getting it working also.

    1) google is your friend.
    2) you need 2 things for it to work, except the phone with gps ofcourse, thats a program to decode the map data - in this case garmin mobile xt and a basemap of srilanka.
    3) when you get those two, you need to have a memory card in your phone, backup all data on it first,
    4) need the usb data cable for your phone, have only tested on nokia phones, N series and E series.
    5) then you need to get a prog to unlock the memory card and the garmin prog to work on the phone, as if you dont, you cant activate your internal gps on your phone.
    6) go read up garmin mobile xt user manual and watch your tube videos on same subject to get a feel for the program and its features.
    7) you will find a incomplete garmin mobile xt program to begin with, with the map loaded and all, its no use, unless your gonna stare at it while your driving
    8) find garmin voice packs on the internet, they have to 1MB and under for it to work, dont ask why files larger than 1MB doesnt work, havnt figured it out
    9) now that you have it working, u need a destination to go to, input that in and it knows your current position, it will calculate the route for you.
    10) please watch garmin nuvi, other gps navigation system videos on youtube to get some idea what its like,
    11) some features of it, current vehicle speed, distance travelled, local weather for that city your visiting, auto route recalculation if you deviate from the chosen path. with voice navigation
    12) need a car phone charger, battery drains fast, battery lasts only 3hrs for a 300km drive. ( not driving at the legal speed limit ofcourse)
    13) no need for internet and there is no way the gov can track it or you, even if you have it on, as gps is foreign. u can always turn off A-GPS feature that relies on the internet only for the sole purpose of getting a quick satellite fix, of under 5secs. if its turned off, it may take 2mins atleast.
    14) when everything is working, you need to download a prog called POI loader, free from garmin, again refer youtube videos on it. this is to add your own custom coordinates, routes etc.
    15) as to finding the voice packs, search for complete maps, europe or any country and you will find voice packs in there for some, you cant install nuvi voice packs on mobile xt, as far as i can verify
    16) to mark custom waypoints, google earth is your friend, learn how to make points and how to export them to cvs files, keep originals seperate for backup purposes
    17) upload custom points using POI loader
    18) you have to be a bit of a tech guy to get it working, first time it always never works, happened to me aswell.
    19) the map doesnt show one way streets or street names ok, but it will route you where you want to go if you input the destination,
    20) there is a way to get the street names onto mobile xt but that involves hours and hours of one by one waypoint creation using google earth. and if you did check, only colombo road names are shown for now, as of today, there are bout 600 road names around colombo, except fort, which i havent done yet.
    21) another feature of gps, you will love this, speed traps, you can set it such a way that it will alert you when you approach such a point,
    22) no use of gps maps if you dont mark points and share with people, check out wikimapia srilanka on google. you get the idea.
    23) entering current location details while there is tricky if you dont have a quick input method, touch screen or full qwerty keyboard greatly improves the efficiency.
    24) need a vehicle windscreen mount bracket for your phone, unless your going to hand hold the phone while driving
    25) set up a pre-programmed key to load the prog so u dont have to go through the menus to load the prog everytime.
    26) always divert to default home screen from current route map when its running when you pulled over for checkpoints/police, lesser they know the better for you and pray the phone doesnt speak 'speed trap 300m ahead' infront of a cop, then you cant give a excuse to them. lol
    27) dialog does sell gps units for Rs.100,000 +, that option is there if you have money to spend
    28) please b careful when using this, i will not be responsible for driving accidents etc cause you were staring at the phone instead of the road.
    29) and lastly, DONT follow the route exactly as it shown unless you want to create a whole new road with your name or go through someones house when navigating by gps.
    30) pay attention to the road at ALL times.

you will never get lost even if you try now, as long as you have a destination marked. sure the road may bumpy, full of checkpoints, 100 foot steep drops ( just kidding),

ill end it by sayin this bit - 'there is nothing you cant achieve if you put your mind into it' limitless possibilities.

    27)
    good luck folks.

this works fine yes but you will get a huge phone bill for gprs/3g usage if your going to use it while driving.

you can cut down the time to signal lock down to 2-5 secs from 2-4 mins if you enable A-GPS option but you need working 3g or gprs for your mobile operator. it gets its values from supl.nokia.com. but if you were to use default gps software which comes with every N series or E nokia phones which is the nokia maps, what you will get is a very broad scale satellite lock, and no detailed roads as shown in google maps for mobile or such.

suggest you use garmin mobile xt, as for one, no internet usage throughout the trip for one ( ofcourse, for that brief moment, it will use the internet to lock on satellite faster but then thats it, it wont rely on the internet any longer. )

pic xxx768 default nokia map view zoomed in
pic xxx775 detailed view of ratnapura zoomed in to 1.2km
pic xxx777 default view of prog
pic xxx773 start to destination(ratnapura) zoomed to 2km, highlighted route in pink. all lines in red are major road, pink is the highlighted route, blue are rivers, brown, bi-roads

all pics taken on nokia n73 so excuse the blurred vision.

hey ironbutcher_x , from where did you get the garmin maps for Sri Lanka ?

hi, i got it from noeman.org and other sites, voice packs from everywhere on the net, pieced it together.

suggest you download the latest garmin mobile xt which is ver 5.0040 is the latest map reader from garmin, but check again, they may have updated it. dont download anything ending with a 'a,b,c' as those are testing products.

as for the map, got it from piratebay.org. u will find alot of torrents with .rar endings, they are fake. same for everything on the net ending with rar. it should be one file, named SriLanka.img its 30,518MB. (my current config ok).

    voice packs 6MB,
    vehicles 76MB

thats all you need. and the garmin map unlocker, check piratebay for that too.

also have the complete instructions/prog to get it working, if you want, i can send it all to you. contact me @ ironbutcher_x on yahoo messenger.

the whole damn srilanka map is 30MB, full detailed, topographical ok. they are on a scale of 5 inch, very very detailed, the pics i uploaded are not set on highest setting as that slows down the phone alot. but please know that, nothing is marked ok, just a bare map, u have to enter your own city names so you know where u are and where u wanna go. that u can do it yourself also, reverse engineer google earth, need time and patience for that, just get coordinates per city basis, export in google earth, it will be a file named .kml. just load up excel and drag drop it in there, go down the page where u see longitude, latitude, descriptions with numbers, highlight those, but make sure first column is longitude not latitude, copy values and description to a separate excel file, save as cvs. then, download POI loader from garmin, load to phone via data cable, when exporting you can set target distance proximity alerts (early warning system if you like) and or speed trap locations with speed limits.

possibilities are endless. needs some techy to get it working but once its done, it works like a charm.

am working on restaurants, archeological sites, etc. but have to physically visit the place to get values for it. have personally inputed 1000 way points in one month by going to each and every place. another place to get those are at wikimapia.org . search on google for wikimapia srilanka and ull get everything marked, just read off the values from description tab to a cvs file or excel and export to cvs. (cvs is basically a file with commas after every tag) and upload to phone via poi loader. but keep original cvs separate as everytime u upload custom POI (points of interest ok) it erases everything u previously wrote to the phone.

sorry for the technical descriptions, a tech guy myself. and i wanted to share this with everyone in srilanka, as everyone deserves that right.

speaking bout dialog navigation, they use a old out dated gadget, and has a 'unique' bug, you cant drive over 50kmh as then the navigator crashes. and it costs Rs.100,000 +. to me, thats a waste of money, as you can buy state of the art GPS - garmin nuvi with maps for $200 in USA but bringing it down is the question, while a phone can pass through customs easily. not saying you should break the law here ok.

but mine, am sure its the best out there and have personally tested while driving at 160 when my SUV is only max 180kmh. and have tested it out in the rural areas, neva got lost, as long as you input a destination point.

    IronbutcherX,
Me too using N82 phone nearly one year & tried several map softwares like GPSMap, google earth, Oziexplore etc..but the best is Garmin XT. But the map has some errors. But I have fixed those using mapedit software but couldn't recreate routable map. But still i'm in the process of creating full detail map. I like o share my map with you all. Pl shre your POI with me

the software I use has inbuilt voice (turn left, turn right like small sentences) but What do you mean by voice 6mb & vehicle 76MB
mail me for further details & share data - [email protected]

what i meant by voice 6mb, vehicles 76mb is the various voices for garmin xt, its 6mb, as for vehicles, unless you want to look at a blue arrow, you can change that to any logo and it displays that instead of the boring blue arrow.

as for POI, i have only a few hundred, working on 2 million points but getting the data is simple as point and click, but verifying it is another bloody headache, i compiled 700 cities in srilanka to a file, that took me 10 mins to extract, verifying each one is annoying, as some are way off by 2 cities (some). no point compiling that to a database if its full of errors. unfortunately there is no short cut in google to extract, so have to do one by one.

the map i use is routable with some minor errors, u can find it online, its unlocked.

i cant do this alone, takes forever to do. and i dont have a life then, if i work full time on this. i think ill complete it by 70 years old then. lol
have IM you, nick same as this one.

Do you get the location names listed properly with the map that you are referring to. In my Nokia E66 only the first letter of the name of the location is given. How can i overcome this problem. When the same map is displayed on mapsource the location names are displayed properly.

one thing u have to remember, mapsource,or any other map wont work with garmin mobile xt. garmin mobile xt only accepts garmin maps, u cant create maps using mapsource or any other. the only way to overcome this 1 or 2 letter problems with this map is to write your own POI which is time consuming but it would be easier for u in the long run too, editing them is easier if u keep it seperate.

best solution, store per city basis, that way duplicate names wont cause a problem and easier to update. but u can get 2 locations with same name in one city, abbrivate that with _1 or -1. keep it simple is the key.

as for custom POI, no other way but to do it manually with google earth/maps. sorry.

keep POI files separate as everytime u upload new ones, old ones also get erased. and it looks neater.

at present, map is fully usable, detailed, lacking names. either u add names in My Locations which show on the map thus creating a mess when u add too many points or, do it the smart way, create separate POI files and upload to phone, that way, map remains clean, easy to read, only shows start and destination points. but u can add a thing like a radar alert so when u get close to a POI, it beeps and shows u whats ahead. that u need to do when ur uploading POI to the phone. u need to set a target distance for it to warn u before u actually come to that point, too close and when it registers as a point, ur already ontop of it. too far also no point, take 2 lanes next to each other on galle road, that is the distance u want to set. too close and it goes off one after the other, too far, warns u too early.

read my other posts, all instructions there.

the default map does show only one letter or 2 letters. that i couldnt correct, so, i solved it in the form of custom POI (points of interest), overlaid google data on same map, load as POI, that way, the map is neat not one big soup of unreadable words and for future editing, easier, just edit individual POI files, files need to be seperate per town basis, as u get the same hotel on 2 or more cities, u can create a POI file like that but when u try to upload to phone, it wont let u as it found duplicate names. this way, i keep it clean and future editing is very easy. but keep original POI files separate as everytime u upload POI, it wipes all POI stored on phone. i first came across this problem when i was doing colombo road names, there are 2 identical names on 2 different areas, if combined into 1 file, how u gonna figure out what is what, and POI loader wont let u load it like that anyways. and ive set proximity alerts so it warns me when am nearing a particular road name. even tho am going somewhere else, so if, i want to, i can deviate through this road and it would recalculate the new route for me automatically.

basically the map is good enough, without any names, as long as u input destination, and given the current location, it calculates the route for u, irrespective of one way roads.

have not worked on hotels and such yet. but shall work on that soon. first is, compiling all road names of whole of srilanka. am almost done with that, took me 4 days to do whole of srilanka.

but some roads are missing, that i cant help. but this is far superior to that of dialog sat nav and the new sunlanka navigation which comes out in aug, but catch, u need to give the defence ministry ur ID,driving licence, vehicle book, insurance, only then do they give u the navigation system and i saw it in action, its primitive, stone age more like. they have no clear cut plans on how they are going to update the maps or how often we customers get it. and thats not the interesting part. u need to get a full dvd system to ur vehicle with bluetooth and all first, that costs Rs.80,000, the gps hardware on top of that and extra items which they conseal inside the dash, like the vehicle alarm systems and the gps antenna clearly visible to anyone and everyone as its mounted on the dash, which gets very very hot, and a sure way to get stopped by the police. they dont know what it is, so u can be taken to police station until they categorise it as it causes no risk for national security of this country and that ur not a tiger. so and all cost would be Rs.150,000. so my question is, why, would anyone willingly give out personal data to the gov when we know for sure that one dept doesnt know what the other dept is doing. and u want to rely on confidentiality by surrendering ur whole identity to the gov and they can fit a remote gps locator in that same vehicle without u knowing it and track u at all times. are u willing to go through all this just to get navigation to be shown 4 points of interests per road only on sunlanka navigation or use dialog sat nav but cant go over 50kmh as if u do, dialog satnav crashes. true.

my advice, lesser anyone knows the better it is. but stay legal at all times.

u go and check out sunlanka sat nav for urself, its in a van, they demo it to u. and then see my pics of my navigation. and come to ur own conclusion...

then theres the other thing, in dash navigation systems are always out of date for one, and u being a good person, mark ur home. before u had navigation, only u know where u live. with nav, u save it. u park the vehicle and go somewhere, sat nav gets stolen. thief now can come to ur house to rob you. in dash nav good but u want to walk, are u goinf to carry ur car on ur shoulder then ?...

it was proven over and over again that in dash sat nav wont work, as different manufacturers do it differently and updates are a must and its bulky, portable ones better, lesser chance of getting stolen.

Hi Ironbutcher_x, Pls send me a link to download the POI file which can then be uploaded to my Garmin nuvi 205W GPS.
By the way, how SALA people upload their map? Is there any way to extract sala map and use in Garmin gps?
The current Sri Lanka map i have is not so accurate.. Sometimes it routes via small roads as shortcuts, but those small roads ends in middle.. It has happen to me few times, and i had to come back via main roads..

    Thanks in advance.
