Do you get the location names listed properly with the map that you are referring to. In my Nokia E66 only the first letter of the name of the location is given. How can i overcome this problem. When the same map is displayed on mapsource the location names are displayed properly.
one thing u have to remember, mapsource,or any other map wont work with garmin mobile xt. garmin mobile xt only accepts garmin maps, u cant create maps using mapsource or any other. the only way to overcome this 1 or 2 letter problems with this map is to write your own POI which is time consuming but it would be easier for u in the long run too, editing them is easier if u keep it seperate.
best solution, store per city basis, that way duplicate names wont cause a problem and easier to update. but u can get 2 locations with same name in one city, abbrivate that with _1 or -1. keep it simple is the key.
as for custom POI, no other way but to do it manually with google earth/maps. sorry.
keep POI files separate as everytime u upload new ones, old ones also get erased. and it looks neater.
at present, map is fully usable, detailed, lacking names. either u add names in My Locations which show on the map thus creating a mess when u add too many points or, do it the smart way, create separate POI files and upload to phone, that way, map remains clean, easy to read, only shows start and destination points. but u can add a thing like a radar alert so when u get close to a POI, it beeps and shows u whats ahead. that u need to do when ur uploading POI to the phone. u need to set a target distance for it to warn u before u actually come to that point, too close and when it registers as a point, ur already ontop of it. too far also no point, take 2 lanes next to each other on galle road, that is the distance u want to set. too close and it goes off one after the other, too far, warns u too early.
read my other posts, all instructions there.
the default map does show only one letter or 2 letters. that i couldnt correct, so, i solved it in the form of custom POI (points of interest), overlaid google data on same map, load as POI, that way, the map is neat not one big soup of unreadable words and for future editing, easier, just edit individual POI files, files need to be seperate per town basis, as u get the same hotel on 2 or more cities, u can create a POI file like that but when u try to upload to phone, it wont let u as it found duplicate names. this way, i keep it clean and future editing is very easy. but keep original POI files separate as everytime u upload POI, it wipes all POI stored on phone. i first came across this problem when i was doing colombo road names, there are 2 identical names on 2 different areas, if combined into 1 file, how u gonna figure out what is what, and POI loader wont let u load it like that anyways. and ive set proximity alerts so it warns me when am nearing a particular road name. even tho am going somewhere else, so if, i want to, i can deviate through this road and it would recalculate the new route for me automatically.
basically the map is good enough, without any names, as long as u input destination, and given the current location, it calculates the route for u, irrespective of one way roads.
have not worked on hotels and such yet. but shall work on that soon. first is, compiling all road names of whole of srilanka. am almost done with that, took me 4 days to do whole of srilanka.
but some roads are missing, that i cant help. but this is far superior to that of dialog sat nav and the new sunlanka navigation which comes out in aug, but catch, u need to give the defence ministry ur ID,driving licence, vehicle book, insurance, only then do they give u the navigation system and i saw it in action, its primitive, stone age more like. they have no clear cut plans on how they are going to update the maps or how often we customers get it. and thats not the interesting part. u need to get a full dvd system to ur vehicle with bluetooth and all first, that costs Rs.80,000, the gps hardware on top of that and extra items which they conseal inside the dash, like the vehicle alarm systems and the gps antenna clearly visible to anyone and everyone as its mounted on the dash, which gets very very hot, and a sure way to get stopped by the police. they dont know what it is, so u can be taken to police station until they categorise it as it causes no risk for national security of this country and that ur not a tiger. so and all cost would be Rs.150,000. so my question is, why, would anyone willingly give out personal data to the gov when we know for sure that one dept doesnt know what the other dept is doing. and u want to rely on confidentiality by surrendering ur whole identity to the gov and they can fit a remote gps locator in that same vehicle without u knowing it and track u at all times. are u willing to go through all this just to get navigation to be shown 4 points of interests per road only on sunlanka navigation or use dialog sat nav but cant go over 50kmh as if u do, dialog satnav crashes. true.
my advice, lesser anyone knows the better it is. but stay legal at all times.
u go and check out sunlanka sat nav for urself, its in a van, they demo it to u. and then see my pics of my navigation. and come to ur own conclusion...
then theres the other thing, in dash navigation systems are always out of date for one, and u being a good person, mark ur home. before u had navigation, only u know where u live. with nav, u save it. u park the vehicle and go somewhere, sat nav gets stolen. thief now can come to ur house to rob you. in dash nav good but u want to walk, are u goinf to carry ur car on ur shoulder then ?...
it was proven over and over again that in dash sat nav wont work, as different manufacturers do it differently and updates are a must and its bulky, portable ones better, lesser chance of getting stolen.
