It has been estimated that up to one quarter of all
personal computers connected to the internet may be part of a botnet.

ok, What is a Bot .? also known as zombie
Basically, a botnet is a mass number of PC's infected with a trojan or worm or whatever bla bla code ..
that allows the hacker to remotely control the PC . .
He will able to access lists of 'zombie' PC's and activate them to help execute DoS attacks against Web sites, host Phishing attack Web sites or send out thousands of Spam email messages.& ur personal pw etc . . Should anyone trace the attack back to its source, they will find an unwitting victim rather than the true attacker.

I believe botnets and botnet behavior have evolved to such a point of
sophistication that it won't be easy to detect less wellknown botnets.
Moreever, botnets are often heavily modded, and thus,
changing its .. and making it harder for Antivirus companies to detect.
There is also much debate about how Antivirus's classify botnet distributed malware,
due to Antivirus ignoring the "botnet" part. Also,
botnets are now increasingly sold and trafficked within the underground economy.
Identifying A 'Zombie/ Bote'd Computer [simple Methods]
If you notice anything odd, like your computer seems to slow down or crash, will slow down internet as unusual, + huge network activities even if the cmputer is idle . .
for no apparent reason, you might suspect that there is some malware running
in the background causing a problem. There are other reasons for symptoms
like those as well though. Scan your computer with current versions of
anti-virus and anti-spyware software to detect any known malware.
even If those scans don't find anything, you might still be infected . .
Protecting Your Computer From 'Bots
run anti-virus / anti-spyware software on your computer.
keep your operating system and applications patched against known vulnerabilities
use a personal firewall program of some sort to shield your computer from unauthorized access.
