19 Journalists were murdered and 109 attacked under Rajapakse regime . Is this Democracy ?- Minister Yapa brazenly says not to talk about it
(Lanka-e-News 11.Dec.2009 12.30PM) Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa at a yesterday’s (10)Cabinet meeting asked , the JVP which says there is no Democracy in the country is clinging on to whom ? Isn’t it with the UNP which killed and burnt their leader. The present Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was maintaining a torture chamber at Batalanda. 60,000 youths were killed .What we did was supporting to come into Democracy. The JVP has joined with the UNP because they are bitter to Democracy. They want to align with Sarath Fonseka and establish a Dictatorship.
Answering questions posed by the media , he gave the following answers.
Q:
You said in SL there are no media freedom or human rights violations. Yet , after the advent of Mahinda Rajapkse as President , , since 2005 , 19 journalists were murdered , 109 were brutally attacked. Aren’t theses democratic or human rights issues?
A:
Let us not talk about these matters.
Q:
At an interview with a print media , Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapkase said , he was aware that Sunday Leader Chief Editor Lasantha was to be murdered , but he did not disclose this because he did not wish to create problems within the army. Were you also aware of this . As media Minister , what is the action you are going to take ?
A:
I am not aware the Defense Secretary has made such a statement. So, I cannot say anything which I do not know of. But , I know one fact . Before Lasantha’s death , he had written his epitaph.

Karuna’s Golaya Ilamparidhi still collecting Kappam in Potuvil –peaceful elections there is doubtful
(Lanka-e-News, Dec.09, 2009, 7.35 PM) It is reported that Karuna‘s golaya (henchman) Ilamparidhi, a leader in Karuna’s administration, is still extorting monies (kappam) from the innocent people living in the coastal belt at Pothuvil with the dismantling of Govt’s armed administration.
This has been revealed in a report of the group of officers of the Elections Dept. who visited the Eastern province to assess the security situation there in connection with upcoming Presidential elections.
According to these reports from Threemalai downwards up to Kathankuda, Pillayan’s administration prevails, and a golaya of his called Thirumalai Jeyam who is an administration leader is with the Army.
The Elections Dept. Officers ‘report also points out that Karuna’s administration prevails in the Batticaloa coastal belt, and his Golaya is acting as though he is a law unto himself with his armed group, while also collecting kappam from the innocent civilians.
All these individuals were leaders of those areas even during the LTTE period.
Former LTTE armed leader Karuna Amman is now with the Govt. having obtained a Ministerial portfolio and is Vice President of the SLFP.
