    ~ Beautiful Butterflies ~

Butterflies have been called the harbingers of climate change, in that their migration patterns have noticeably changed due to warming temperatures.
Climate change and habitat loss are battering butterflies, which are so important to plant pollination, to the health of other species who feed on them, and to us - who adore watching them. Here's a look at the gorgeous insects that brighten up our world.

Butterflies have an interesting - and symbolic - transition from egg to fully fledged butterfly. This Monarch caterpillar is filling up, getting ready for the chrysalis phase. It needs its strength, since once it hatches as a butterfly, it will have to make an incredible journey.

Butterflies usually stand out, but many species are experts at fading into the background, like this Owl butterfly at the London Butterfly House in Syon Park.

This Lime Butterfly actually goes by several names based on what food it gathers, which is usually citrus.
Other names for the butterfly include the Lemon Butterfly, the Small Citrus Butterfly, the Chequered Swallowtail and the Dingy Swallowtail.

Sometimes the beauty comes not just from the wings themselves, but how the colors contrast against backgrounds. Against a teal backdrop, this orange butterfly couldn't be more vivid.

While often beautiful, butterflies can also be down right creepy looking. This Giant Swallowtail is gathering nectar, and looks all too much like other insects we aren't fond of like the mosquito. Still, they're fascinating - note the little hooks on its feet so it can grab the flowers.

Luckily, butterflies are not blood-suckers like mosquitos - well, not most, anyway.
The madrilenial butterfly actually makes it on the Top Ten list of bloodsuckers over at Animal Planet.
    Check out a video.

Some butterflies spread wide nets for their habitat. This painted lady is one example - it's a species that has near global distribution.

This Red-Banded Jezzebel was spotted resting in the rainforest of tropical Hinchinbrook island in Australia.

Butterflies, as we mentioned, are having a rough time with the changes in global temperatures and habitat loss. While there have been success stories in bringing near-extinct species back from the brink, we have to also think about ways to prevent them from getting so close to the edge in the first place.
