General Election Sri Lanka 2010 – Highlights of Preferential vote results
    9 Apr 2010

The 2010 General election in Sri Lanka has ended in massive victory to progressive Mahinda Rajapaksa government. The people of the country have given their verdict for individual candidates. Following are the interesting highlights of preferential voting results.

    Key Facts
    The Winner:
UPFA is likely to get total of closer to 143 seats (including National list) which is very closer to magical 150 (2/3 majority). It was widely believed that no party would ever even think of closing to 2/3 majority under current voting system. Without doubts this is the biggest victory of a political stream in Sri Lankan history.

    The Loser:
JVP which had secured 39 members in the parliment has diminish to 3 (DNA has won 5 seats out of two are won by Sarath Fonseka and Arjuna Ranthunga who are not JVP members)

    The Diminished:
UNP which had won 71 seats (excluding National list seats) has only managed to secure 46 seats (Only Kandy and T'malee results are yet to be officially released).

Highlights of Colombo District results for UPFA
The most actively patriotic members of UPFA are among the top in the list. Interestingly most of them are not directly from SLFP but allied patriotic parties of UPFA.
    1. Wimal Weerawansa (JNP/UPFA)
    3. Champika Ranawaka (JHU/UPFA)
    4. Dinesh Gunawardana (MEP/UPFA)
JNP leader Wimal Weerawansa (280,672) has secured more preferential votes than UNP leader Ranil Wickramasingha (230,957) in Colombo.
Bandula Gunawardana who has been fiercely fighting with multi-national giants like Shell and Nestle and comprador local business mafia in order to safeguard the rights of common people (consumers) have given clear mandate by people of Colombo to continue his good work by electing him in the top half (fifth) of the list.
People of colombo has speak loud and clear !!!
The UNP crossed over former Foreign Minister of Rajapaksa Government Rohitha Bogollagama has shown his due destiny in politics. He was notorious for exorbitan expenditure and waste of public money (and tarnished charcter). He was previously elcted from Kurunagala under UNP tiket and this time parachute to Colombo for survival.
A H M Fouzi who was highlighted for inefficiency and possible corruption of Hedging deal which resulted in Billions of national money to foreign banks has mere survived in the bottom of the list. The verdict is clear. No more responsibilities to inefficient and ineffective people.
Secatry of UPFA and district leader Susil Premajayantha has hair breadth escape in to survive in the list. He is known for lazy and indifferent approach in reviving education ministry. He was more than happy to continue comprador pro western education system as oppose to comply with Mahinda Chinthana national agenda. The verdict of the people is loud and clear. We need people who implement Mahinda Chinthanaya and others must step down.
Gamini Lokuge - the last in the list. The sympathetic votes for not doing anything but being mere jack for MR ? Those who voted for Lokuge can now go into another political sleep till next election or go after him for petty political favourism. He will do nothing else for the Kasbawa electorate or people of Colombo.

Highlights of Monaragala District results for UNP
UNP managed to secure only one seat from Monaragala District. The only seat was won by Ranjith Maddamubandara who was alleged of manipulating UNP nomination list and now engaged in political and legal battle against UNP leader Ranil Wickramasingha. UNP has officially requested all UNP members in Monaragala to not to cast preferential votes for Ranjith Maddumabandara !
