Nvidia: GeForce GTX 480 Was Designed to Run Hot

Hot -- the way it's meant to be played.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 480 is a hot card, both figuratively and literally. It features the latest and greatest from Nvidia, and it also runs quite hot when asked to push pixels. Those looking for lowering their energy consumption from their computers aren't likely to find their greenest solutions in the GTX 480. But according to Nvidia, that's the way it's meant to be played.
Nvidia's Drew Henry earlier this week updated its company blog in response to concerns of the GeForce GTX 480's hungry and hot tendencies:

A GTX480 SLi outperforms the 5970, and if it had Low power consumption and Less heat.. it shud hv been a kick ass!

In about 2-3 Months GTX4XX x2's will be available with a die shrink so the Power+the heat will be reduced

die shrink will not happen till this december ... TSMC has already briefed nVdia and Ati on this ... so no 28nm SC processes until december ... and if you want two FERMI chips on one card ... then the clocks and the no.of shaders ahs to be reduced ... if that happens the x2 will performs less or similar to 5970  ...

and yes 2 GTX480s will outperform a 5970 ... but remember you need at least a good 900W power supply and also a awesome case with great airflow to keep down the temps ...

and did i mention a pair of earmuffs ...
