    Step 11:

Apply a Gaussain Blur to our shadow layer “think shadow” and change it’s blending mode to multiply. Now add a layer mask to the “think shadow” layer to fade out the shadow using a gradient (or use a soft eraser).
    Step 12:

Looking pretty good! Now let’s add some lighting effects. Press P to select the pen tool and create a Path like this.
Now select a brush of size of 5px with 100% hardness. Select White as your foreground color. Select the pen tool again—the path you drew before should still be there. Right click and select “stroke path” tool. Select Brush from drop down menu and turn on “stimulate pressure”. You will get stroke like this:
    Step 13:

Name the this stroke layer as “Wave 1″ and duplicate the layer. Go to filter > Distort > Wave and apply filter with these settings:

This will give an extra wavy look to the stroke.
    Step 14:

Create some more waves by following the steps 12 & 13 and arrange them around the text. Apply a light gussian blur to some waves to give them a sense of depth. If everything is done correctly then it will look like this:
    Step 15:

As an optional step, we can add some stars to our text. Press “U” to select the custom shape tool and select 5 point star.
Make a new document of size 100 x 100 px and make a star with the 5 point star shape. Fill it with black and then ctrl + click the same layer to get selection of star. Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset, create the brush and name it star brush.
    Step 16:

Press F5 to access the brush panel and apply these settings:
Brush tip shape – spacing 30%
Shape Dynemics – size jitter & angle jitter 100%
Scattering – 578% on both axis
    Other Dynemics – opacity 100%.

    Step 17:

Select this star brush and keep its size to 15 px. Set foreground color to “#ff62ad“. Create another path with the pen tool, right click to select “stroke path”. Turn on stimulate pressure and create a wave of stars. Name this new layer something like “Star Wave”.
    Step 18:

Now we just need to hide this star wave layer from some places to make it seem as if it is passing through layers. I prefer to use a mask, and manually filling in the areas I want to hide.

Here is the image that we will create. Click on it to see the full-size version.

    Step 1

Open a new document in Photoshop (Ctrl/Cmd + N). My document is 1280px wide and 800px high. Download this image and open it in Photoshop. Move the image into your first document and use Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T) to change the size of this image. Name this layer “bg”.

    Step 2

Duplicate the “bg” layer (Ctrl/Cmd + J) and name the new layer “land”. Add a mask to this layer (Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All) and use a black brush (B) to erase the top area of the photo (the sky and the castle). See the image below for reference. Then hide the “bg” layer.
If you haven’t worked with Photoshop masks before, let me explain how they work. If you know what Photoshop mask are, you can skip this paragraph. When you create a mask, you can paint with a brush on it (or any other drawing tool) to erase/reveal different areas of the layer linked to that mask. When you paint with black on a mask, that painted area will be erased from the correspondent layer. The white area of the mask represents the visible area of the linked layer and gray represents transparency. Why not use the Eraser Tool instead of masks? Well, with masks you can always go back and modify the visible/invisible area of a layer simply by painting with black or white. The modifications made with Eraser Tool (E) are definitive. That’s one of the biggest advantages of using Photoshop masks.

    Step 3

Those trees from the right hand side of the image don’t look good at all and we need to get rid of them. I’ll show you how to do this.
First, use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) to create a selection like the one you see below. Then make sure that the “land” layer is active and hit Ctrl/Cmd + J. This will create a new layer with the selected area of the “land” layer. Name the new layer “land 2″.
With the “land 2″ layer selected go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal. Select the Move Tool (V) and move the “land 2″ layer in the right hand side of the document.

    Step 4

Now we will use a mask to erase the right hand area of the “land 2″ layer.
Go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Then select a black soft brush (B), make sure that the mask is active and paint with your brush over the right hand area to remove that straight line. Select the two land layers and hit Ctrl/Cmd + G to group them. Name the group “land”.

    Step 5

Download this image and open it in Photoshop. Then use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) to select the sky. Hit Ctrl/Cmd + C to copy your selection, then go back to your first document and hit Ctrl/Cmd + V to paste it. Go to Edit > Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T), hold down the Shift key and change the size of this image.
Name this layer “sky”, put it inside a group (Ctrl/Cmd + G) and name the group “sky” as well. Then put the “sky” group underneath the “land” group.

    Step 6

Now we will do some color adjustments to the sky. Make sure that the “sky” layer is selected. Then go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option and use the settings from the following image.

    Step 7

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option and click OK. Then tick the Colorize option and use the settings from the following image.

    Step 8

Download some star and planet brushes and install them in Photoshop. Set the foreground color to white, create a new layer, select one of the brushes you downloaded and use it to create some stars. Continue to add more stars and planets on your sky. Use each brush in a new layer. Then group all these layers and name the group “stars”. Set the opacity of each layer to 70-90%.
As you can see in the image below I added a big planet in the middle of the image and lots of stars around it to give the image a surreal look.

    Step 9

Download this castle photo and open it in Photoshop. Then use the Pen Tool (P) to extract the castle from the background. Select the Move Tool (V) and move the castle into your first document. Use Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T) to change the size of the castle and place it in the middle of your image, on the top of the hill. Name this layer “castle”, hit Ctrl/Cmd + G to put it inside a group and name the group “castle” as well.

    Step 10

Add a mask to the “castle” layer (Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All). Then select a black hard brush (B) and use it to erase the bottom area of the castle to make it look like it’s really there. Also, erase the area of the castle that covers the front rocks.

    Step 11

Download this girl photo and open it in Photoshop. Then select the Pen Tool (P) and separate the girl from the background. Use the Move Tool (V) to move the girl into your first document. Then go to Edit > Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T), change the size of this layer and flip it horizontally. We’ll try to make the girl look like she’s floating in the air.
Name this layer “girl”, double-click on it and use the settings from the following image for Outer Glow. Put this layer inside a group and name the group “girl” as well.

    Step 12

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option and use the settings from the following image.

    Step 13

Create a new layer. Then select the Brush Tool (B), select a small white soft brush (B) and use it to draw some random lines like you see in the following image. Name this layer “lights”, right-click on it and select Convert to Smart Object.
Then go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur and use the settings from the following image. Set the blend mode of the “lights” layer to Overlay. You can also add a mask and erase some areas of the light if you think it’s necessary.

    Step 14

Now we will use the Brushes panel to create a new brush. Select the Brush Tool (B) and select a small soft brush. Then open the Brushes panel (Window > Brushes) and use the settings from the following image. To save your brush, click on the ‘Create new brush’ button from the bottom of this panel.

    Step 15

Create a new layer and name it “sparks”. Set the foreground color to white and use the brush you created at the previous step to draw some sparks around the girl. Put this layer inside a group (Ctrl/Cmd + G), set its blend mode to Color Dodge and name it “sparks”.

    Step 16

Now we will add some trees around the castle. Download this image and open it in Photoshop. Go to Select > Color Range, click on the white background of the image and then click OK. This will select the white background. However, we need only the tree, so we’ll have to inverse the selection. Go to Select > Inverse. Then copy the tree (Ctrl/Cmd + C), go back to the first document and paste it.
Name this layer “tree” and use Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T) to change its size. Put this layer inside a group and name it “tree” as well. Add a mask to the “tree” layer and use a black soft brush to erase its bottom area.

    Step 17

Now we need to do some color adjustments to the tree. First, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option and use the settings from the following image.
Then go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option, then tick the Colorize option and use the settings from the following image.
Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option and use the settings from the following image.

    Step 18

Continue to add more trees to your image, but use a different size and location for each one. Take a look at the following image for reference.

    Step 19

Download these brushes and install them. Set the foreground color to white, create a new layer and use some of those brushes to create a subtle fog. Name this layer “fog”, set its opacity to 10% and put it inside a group. Name the group “fog” as well.

    Step 20

Download this photo and open it in Photoshop. Then use the Pen Tool (P) to separate the knight from the background. Move the knight into your first document using the Move Tool (V). Then go to Edit > Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T) and change the size of this layer.
Name this layer “knight”, add a mask to it and use a black brush (B) to adjust different areas of the layer like the horse’s legs or the top of the knight’s weapon. Put this layer inside a group and name it “knight”.

    Step 21

Make sure that the “knight” layer is active, then go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option and use the settings from the following image.

    Step 22

Now we will add a shadow to the knight. Ctrl/Cmd-click on the thumbnail of the “knight” layer to select it. Then create a new layer and fill the selection with black. Hit Ctrl/Cmd + D to deselect.
Name this layer “shadow”, right-click on it and select Convert to Smart Object. Then go to Edit > Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T), hold down the Ctrl/Cmd key and modify the transformation box as you see in the image below. Add a 2px gaussian blur (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) to this layer and set its opacity to 35%.

    Step 23

Download this photo and open it in Photoshop. Use the Pen Tool (P) to separate the horse rider from the background and then move him into your first document using the Move Tool (V). Name this layer “horse rider”. Then go to Edit > Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T) and change the size of this layer.
Hit Ctrl/Cmd + G to put this layer inside a group and name it “horse rider” as well.

    Step 24

Select the Burn Tool and use the settings from the following image to make some areas of the horse rider darker. Then hold down the Alt/Option key to switch to the Dodge Tool and make some area of the horse rider brighter.

    Step 25

Add a mask to the “horse rider” layer and use a black soft brush to erase the bottom area of the horse’s legs.

    Step 26

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option and use the settings from the following image.

    Step 27

Add a shadow to the horse rider using the same process that you used for the knight.

    Step 28

Now all we need to do is add some color adjustment layers to make the image stand out. You can experiment with these adjustment layers by yourself, or you can use the exact same ones that I used.
You can add the adjustment layers from the menu (Layer > New Adjustment Layer) or by clicking on the ‘Create new fill or adjustment layer’ button from the bottom of the Layers panel (the half-black-half-white circle).
Create a new group (Layer > New > Group) and name it “adjustments”. Then go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map and use the settings from the following image. To create the gradient I used the colors #2288ae and #dcb620. Set the blend mode of this layer to Overlay 10%.

    Step 29

Add a new Selective Color adjustment layer and se the settings from the following image. Set the opacity of this layer to 60%.

    Step 30

Add a new Gradient Map adjustment layer and use the settings from the following image. Set the blend mode of this layer to Soft Light 60%. To create the gradient I used the colors #320958 and #eeb814.

    An Interesting Graffiti Effect

Here is one more interesting tutorial how to create an interesting graffiti effect on the wall using Photoshop tools.

So, let’s start! First of all it will be good to find the wall texture. I tried this one. Open up this file and start to stylize the texture. In the beginning use Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation with next presets.
    graffiti_effect_01.jpg
Correct hue, saturation and brightness for current texture. You result should be next:
    graffiti_effect_02.jpg
Ok, move to the next step. This texture will be better with adding a little bit sharpness. Use the Sharpen Tool and a soft round brush about 400px.
    graffiti_effect_03.jpg
Looks better, don’t you think? Now, start with graffiti. Go to Google Images and find some appropriate image (pay your attention that we will use just image, no photos). This one will be good. Open up it and copy to the main canvas with texture. Change layer mode for this picture to Multiply.
    graffiti_effect_04.jpg
You might also want to try stylize it. I have one interesting idea for you. Get started by selecting the Smudge Tool and use one of the standard Photoshop brushes.
    graffiti_effect_05.jpg
Create a couple of long smudges as on my picture below:
    graffiti_effect_06.jpg
After that select the Sharpen Tool to make it sharpen.
    graffiti_effect_07.jpg
This design wouldn’t be complete without some sort of text now, would it? Start by getting out the Horizontal Type Tool and write out some text, in this case I used two lines of text.
    graffiti_effect_08.jpg
The graffiti font which I’ve used above is called Eraser, and you can download it completely for free from here. After you’re all done with the text settings, position it accordingly by using Edit > Transform > Rotate and move it up a little bit.
    graffiti_effect_09.jpg
Looks good, isn’t it? Ok, move to the next step. To create an impression that the text dealt with the stencil. Use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to create selection as on my picture below:
    graffiti_effect_10.jpg
Then reverse the selected area with Ctrl+Shift I and then get out the Brush Tool and one of the standard Photoshop brushes to create spray spots with black color.
    graffiti_effect_11.jpg
The result should be the next:
    graffiti_effect_12.jpg
Remove the selection with Ctrl+D. We are done for now! Enjoy your own cool graffiti and don’t be afraid to experiment!

    CATCH ME IF U CAN
    16.

In this Photoshop manipulation tutorial I will show you how to create a night scene environment. You will learn how to use the burn tool to create a very nice effect on a body and how to turn a daylight picture into a night scene.
    Final result preview

    beauty-in-the-lake-final.jpg

    Materials needed

    Cosmos sky by resurgere: http://resurgere.deviantart.com/art/Package-Cosmos-2-63241815
Mountain Lake by Zac Donald: http://zac-donald.deviantart.com/art/Mountain-Lake-75438789
    Woman: http://www.psdbox.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/woman-in-the-lake.jpg
    Step 1

The first thing you have to do is open the mountains lake picture, this will be your base for this artwork. I resized this image to 1000×750 but later one I realized that I shouldn’t have done it.
Let me point out why. The reason why I scaled it down is because the sky stock image that I added next is only 1200px wide but I could have blended it with a solid color to fill up the empty space. The reason why you should use the full size image is because later on you will have greater control over the girl’s face details when you get there.
So once you open the image, cut out the sky with the Pen Tool (P) and mask it or delete it. Make some adjustments using Adjustment Layers. I increased the mid tones using Levels and I changed the overall color of the image using a Gradient Map with Hard Light blend mode. I also added a blue outer glow to the mountains with blend mode Vivid Light.
    1-background-adjustments1.jpg

    Step 2

Download the Resurgere cosmos pack and get the cosmos2_0002.jpg. You can use another image if you want, just try to use one with blue tones because it will make your job easier. I went for a blue tone of my final result but if you want another color now it’s a good time to decide.
Paste your sky below the mountains layer and increase the contrast. I flipped the image vertically because I like it more like that.
    2-sky-adjustments.jpg

    Step 3

Now open the woman image and use the Pen Tool (P) to subtract her from the original background. Make sure you also pick up the reflection too. Paste the image on a new layer above the sky and the background layers. If you’re using the 1000×750 resolutionlike I did, scale the woman to about 60% of the original size.
Don’t worry about the hair right now. Just cut the basic shape. Use a layer mask and a soft brush to blend the bottom part that contains the reflection with the water. See image below.
    3-woman-in-the-lake.jpg

    Step 4

Now you have to recreate the hair because the sharp edges don’t look good at all. In order to do that you will have to use the Smudge Tool. Set the size of the Smudge brush to about 15px, Strength to about 45% and smudge the edges of the hair.
    4-hair-smudge.jpg

    Step 5

Now decrease the size of the smudge brush to 1px and increase the Strength to 85-95% and smudge the hair again but this time create the single hairs. Make long undulated strokes. If you have a tablet this is easier to do than with the mouse. I used the mouse.
    5-hair-smudge-long.jpg

    Step 6

This is a very important step. If you make this right you can end up with a very nice result. You will use the Dodge and Burn tools to enhance the body of the woman and get that soft/glossy look on her skin. This is a very used technique on portrait and general body manipulations.
Create a new clipping mask layer for the woman and fill it with 50% gray. You can do that by going to Edit>Fill and choose 50% gray from the drop-down list. Then, change the blend mode to Overlay and rename the layer dodge/burn.
As you can see on the image below I duplicated the woman layer and placed it as clipping mask then I added some surface blur but you don’t necessarily have to do it because the change is minor.
    6-dodge-burn-layer.jpg

Now, get the burn tool, set Range to Midtones, Exposure to 7-8% and brush along the darker areas of the body. Use a medium size soft brush. Then do the same with the Dodge tool but this time brush the lighter areas of the body. Make several passes.
I know that this can be a pretty abstract task specially for beginners that are not used to this technique. If you make mistakes use the Brush Tool and paint back with 50% gray.
On the hair area I used a small brush and I tried to dodge and burn on a more detailed level. I tried to burn even single hairs.
With this technique you can even change the face features of a person. Take a look at the image below to see where I used the Dodge and Burn tools.
If you don’t see any difference, just try deactivating the dodge/burn layer and you’ll see it.
    6b-dodge-burn-result-580x428.jpg

    Step 7

Now you can start blending this woman with the surrounding scene. The first thing you’ll need to do is to change her color. Open the layer styles of the woman layer and activate Inner Shadow, change the color to a dark cyan as shown below and blend mode to Color Dodge. I used the Inner Shadow because I wanted to enhance the bounce light on her back
Activate Color Overlay, change the blend mode to Linear Light and color to a dark blue. See image below for more details.
    7-woman-layer-style.jpg

Add a Levels adjustment layer and increase the highlights and lower the midtones. Then add a Black & White adjustment layer and use the settings shown in the image below. I set the opacity of the Black & White layer to 70% in order to keep some of the natural color of the skin.
    7b-woman-adjustment-layers.jpg

And that’s it, everything is ready for the post editing work
    Step 8

What I always do when I’m done is create a stamp. Select the top most layer and use the shortcut Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E to create a stamp. It basically creates a new layer with everything that you see on the screen, so make sure all layers are activated before you stamp. From now one you will work on this stamp.
You should transform this layer into a Smart Object because you will apply some filters and you want them to be non-destructive. So right click on the layer and choose Convert to Smart Object.
Go to Image>Adjustments>Shadow/Highlights, expand the advanced settings, reduce Shadow Amount to 0, increase Midtone Contrast to about 43 and Color Correction to about 20.
    8-post-editing-shadows-highlights.jpg

Then go to Filter>Render>Lighting Effects. Use the settings shown below.
    8b-post-editing-lighting-effects.jpg

That’s about all that I did to this image. You can make more contrast adjustments if you want. I hope you liked the tutorial. As always, credit me and this tutorial if you get a good result. You can download the PSD file using the download link below.
    Final Result

I decreased the size of the final result and I applied some sharpening. It looks better than the original size.

    CATCH ME IF U CAN
    17.
In this photoshop tutorial I will show you how to use stock images to make a beautiful digital artwork with nicely colored lights. All you need for this tutorial is my Colors in Motion textures pack and a model.

I found the model on deviantArt.

You can download the picture here.

If you want to use another stock image, try the gallery if ISO Stock,

you will find very good stock images there.

For this tutorial I will use the girl that you see on the preview.
So, power up Photoshop and let’s get started.

    Step 1

Open the girl model in photoshop and using the Pen Tool (P), trace the contour but make sure you have the paths selected. I suggest using the pen tool technique because it’s a lot more accurate. Also, when you’re dealing with high resolution images like this, try to subtract the subject from the background before scaling down the original image because you will be more accurate.
After you traced the contour, with the pen tool active, right click and choose “Make Selection”. Delete the background.
Create a new document 1500×2026 pixels and paste the girl, name this layer model. Create a new layer below the model layer, use a radial Gradient (G) and draw from the top left corner of the canvas to the bottom right. Use a light gray 66686b as foreground color and 474b4e for the background. See the image below.
    digital-art-tutorial-step1.jpg

    Step 2

Now we are going to make some adjustments to the color and the contrast and add some shadows.
Make some color adjustments and increase the contrast of the girl. I used Adjustments Layers because they are non destructive, in other words, you can eliminate the adjustment layer or modify it without affecting the original image.
    Levels settings to increase contrast.

    digital-art-tutorial-contrast-step2.jpg

    Saturation settings to increase color

    digital-art-tutorial-hue-step2.jpg

After making this adjustments, make some shadows on the ground to give a more realistic look, otherwise it looks like the girl is hanging in the air.
To add the shadows like I did in the image below, use different size brushes and hardnesses on different layers. For the contact shadows use a 35% hardness brush and diameter 30 pixels. Set Flow and Opacity of the brush to 40-50% and make several passes along the inner edge of both feet.
To make the big ground shadow use a bigger soft brush. Try to get something like the image below. The next tutorial will be all about shading techniques so don’t worry now if you don’t get it right.
    digital-art-tutorial-shadows-step2.jpg

    Step 3

This is where the fun and the creative stuff starts. I will give the links to the images that we will use next but if you want to make this with different images, download the Colors in Motion pack and the Cosmic Lights PNG images pack .
The first image that I used was from the Cosmic Lights pack. Open the image “18-star-radiation” and paste it on a new layer below the girl’s layer but above the shadow layers, change it’s Blending Mode to Screen and if you see that is not visible enough duplicate the layer or increase the saturation to make the colors more visible.
    digital-art-tutorial-step3.jpg

Now open the image “11-cosmic-rays” from the same pack, flip it vertically and paste it above the girl’s layer and change the blending mode to Screen, just like you did with the previous one. You should get something like in the image below.
    digital-art-tutorial-step3b.jpg

Use a soft edge Brush and 75-85% Opacity and on a new layer under the two previous lights click just one time with the brush and change the Blending Mode to Color Dodge. I used the color bc7a39.
    digital-art-tutorial-step3-softlight1.jpg

Now you have to do the same but using a bigger brush, a different Blending Mode and this time the layer must be above the girl layer. For the color I used e2a02d and the blending mode Screen. The way to do this next light is by making 2 strokes. The first one using a 650px brush and 50% opacity and the second one on the same layer on the center of the first stroke using a 350px brush and 100% Opacity.
    digital-art-tutorial-step3-softlight2.jpg

Open the “stock 4” image in photoshop and paste it above the previous light that you just made but flip it first, like in the image below. After that, change the blending mode to Screen.
    digital-art-tutorial-step3-light-streak.jpg

Open “red_light.jpg” and paste it over the left foot and change the Blending Mode to Screen. As you can see we will use this technique for all stock images that have black background.
    digital-art-tutorial-step3-red_light.jpg

    Step 4

All the lights that we just added on step 3 look great but we can make them look a bit better by adding some lights on the floor and on the girl’s body. We will do that manually and we will start with the left leg where you just added the red_light.jpg
Locate the model layer on the palette and click it’s thumbnail while you hold down the CTRL key in order to select it’s edges. Once you have the edges selected, create a new layer above the model layer (the layer of the girl) and create a layer mask on it. I named this layer ambient lights. This is necessary because we want to paint the lights only on the body.
    10-digital-art-tutorial-step4.jpg

Change the Blending Mode of the ambient lights layer to Color Dodge. Select a soft edge brush about 90px in diameter and set the Opacity of the brush to 20%. As I said, we will start with the left leg so the light that we need should match the red color of the stock image that we used on step 3. But because the blending mode of the layer is set to Color Dodge, we must use a lighter and less saturated color, I used e0446c. With the soft brush selected paint along the edges of the left leg.
You must create a stronger light at the bottom of the leg making multiple passes with the brush and fade out the effect with less brush strokes as you go up because the light is fading away. Do the same thing on the right leg but use green and yellow desaturated colors and paint on the same ambient lights layer.
    11-digital-art-tutorial-step4.jpg

Create a new layer above the model layer and set the blending mode to Color Dodge. Paint the floor with a soft brush and color 8c0548. Reduce the opacity of the layer if the effect is too strong. See image below.
    12-digital-art-tutorial-step4.jpg

Now we will move to the upper parts of the body and using more stock images from the packs mentioned earlier, add more lights.
On the hand I used the image Color_gradient (15) located in the “smoother gradients” folder from the Colors in Motion pack. Again change the Blending Mode to Screen and duplicate the layer for a stronger effect.
    13-digital-art-tutorial-step4.jpg

Add another light to the hand from the same textures pack. I used the image Color (13) and I changed the Hue from Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation to match the colors of the first image added on the hand on the previous step. This time I didn’t duplicate the layer.
    14-digital-art-tutorial.jpg

Use the same technique and add the image Color_gradient (18) like in the image below.
    15-digital-art-tutorial.jpg

    Step 5

Now things will get even brighter with some soft spotlights that we will add on this step. You can paint this spotlights above all the other layers on the palette.
From now on you will need a big soft brush to make this lights. We are going to start from the bottom part.
Se the brush color to 534906 and using a 600-750 pixels brush size and Opacity 65%, stroke once over the bottom right leg where we added the first lights at the beginning of this tutorial and set the layer Blending Mode to Color Dodge. That will make the light even brighter. See image below.
    16-digital-art-tutorial.jpg

Change the brush size to 800px, create a new layer and set the foreground color to 064953. Make another light on the girl’s back and change the layer’s blending mode to Color Dodge (Add).
    17-digital-art-tutorial.jpg

Do the same on the hand but this time using two different colors and different opacities. For the first stroke, use a 500px brush and the color 5a4f34. Set the brush Opacity to 100% and hardness to 0%. Create a new layer and click once over the fingers of the girl’s hand. Decrease the layer’s Opacity to 65% and change the Blending Mode to Color Dodge.
Make a new layer above the previous one and increase the brush size to about 960px. Change the color to 574739 and click once over the same spot as before. Leave the layers opacity to 100% and change the Blending mode to Color Dodge (Add). You should get something like in the image below.
    18-digital-art-tutorial.jpg

Download the Media Militia particles pack and open two images that look like an explosion and paste them on the base of the right leg and over the light that you made on the previous step. Change the Blending Mode for both images to Color Dodge (add). Depending on the images you choose you might need to use another blending mode that fits better.
    19-digital-art-tutorial.jpg

    Step 6 – post editing

We are almost there. What we are going to do in this final step is shift the general lights of the image using the Lighting Effects filter. That’s something that I recommend you do always because you will always end up with a much better result. We are also going to reduce the size of the image. If you remember, on the first step we set the image resolution to 1500×2026 pixels but now we will make it smaller. Is always better to work with a high resolution image and then make it smaller. That way, you have more control for example when you cut out the image from its background.
Save your work because we are going to work on a new document. To create a copy of the final result you have two options. The first one is to select the top most layer on your layers palette and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E to create a stamp of the image and then copy and paste it into a new document. The second option is to select the entire canvas with Ctrl+A and then go to Edit>Copy Merged.
Now create a new document by pressing Ctrl+N or go to File>New and the new document should be the exact size as the image you have on your clipboard (as long as you copied the image). Paste the image on the new document and resize it (Ctrl+Alt+i) to 1000×1351. I added a default Lens Flare to the hand but that’s up to you. Go to Filter>Render>Light Effects and apply the settings that you see on the image below.
    20-digital-art-tutorial.jpg

Now make the image sharper. Go to Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask and apply the settings from the image below TWICE.
    21-digital-art-tutorial.jpg

And that’s how you make a cool digital art manipulation. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and that you learned something. If you like this technique feel free to spread the word and submit this tutorial to as many social sites as possible, I would really appreciate that.

    Enjoy with PS
