Inter-provincial tournament to have foreign players in new concept

images-738488.jpeg

Sri Lanka will be inviting some top notch overseas cricketers to take part in the forthcoming Inter-Provincial T20 series on the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Several top level cricketers from New Zealand have been approached by the marketing agents of the Somerset Entertainment Group, which holds the rights of the Inter-Provincial T20 tournament in Sri Lanka.
Ross Taylor, who was sold for a whopping 1.3 million dollars in the IPL auction last week, is one player who has been approached, the Sunday Star-Times of New Zealand reported. Wicket keeper batsman Brendon McCullum and all-rounder Jacob Oram too have been approached by the marketing agents. These players will be paid around 20,000 to 30,000 dollars for the two week event.
The tournament is scheduled to be sandwiched between Sri Lanka's tour to England and Australia's tour of Sri Lanka this year.
"It's somewhere in July-August", said a cricket official, who declined to reveal more details of the competition.
Some 25 overseas players have already been looked at and four players per team will be allowed. In case the marketing agents are able to find more players; the tournament will be expanded to seven provincial teams.
Around 90 top level Sri Lankan cricketers have been divided into five Provincial teams in the Inter-Provincial limited over tournament which is currently being held. Basnahira, Wayamba, Kandurata, Ruhuna and Uva are the five Provincial teams taking part in the competition.
Analysts believe cricketers the all over the world will have a tough time as virtual mercenaries with an endless chain of cricket in various parts of the world.
The flagship event of the ICC, the Cricket World Cup starts on February 19 and ends on April 2. A week later the IPL starts in which almost all of the top cricketers take part until May 22.
Soon after, Sri Lanka embarks on a grueling tour of England for a three match test series and a One Day International series. When the best 15 Sri Lanka cricketers are in England, the rest of the of players will be engaged in the Inter-Club T20 tournament in Sri Lanka.
The team will return to the island only days before the Inter-Provincial T20 tournament. "I know they are interested in me but I haven't seen a finalised contract and I haven't signed a contract," Oram told the Star-Times on Sunday.
Two years ago, Sri Lankan opener T. M. Dilshan was hired by Northern Districts of New Zealand for a T20 domestic competition in New Zealand.
Sri Lanka is set to earn 300,000 US dollars per tournament and the secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket's interim committee, Nishantha Ranatunga confirmed that this year's amount has already been paid by the rights holders.
"We didn't even have sponsors for our Inter-Provincial tournaments in the past but it's really good that we can earn some money now with this kind of concept", Ranatunga said.
Sri Lankan Cricket authorities will have to spend around 10 to 15 million rupees each year for logistics of the Inter-Provincial T20 cricket tournament.

The fan who rose to be a superstar contends World Cup counts for little without the people

Sangakkara%281%29.jpg

Sri Lanka’s cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara pours his heart out at the launch of a “cheer song” for the World Cup at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo yesterday.

Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara yesterday acknowledged that cricket was truly a people’s game and the World Cup meant nothing to his team if it weren’t for them to play on the world stage where national pride overtook everything else.
Sangakkara, who was just a 19-year old schoolboy when he witnessed Sri Lanka lift the World Cup in 1996, opened up and held back nothing as he graced the launch of a song for the people to coincide with the final countdown for the big occasion.
The south paw batsman who rose from being a mere spectator to the superstar he is, virtually out-punched the rest of speakers before him and declared the World Cup was more than just a piece of silverware.
“This honour (of playing for the country) was afforded to us by the people of Sri Lanka. It is they who endure hardships to watch us play and have made us what we are today. Thank you for making us do what we love to do”, said Sangakkara as he stole the show at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.
He was wise enough not to make any commitments although promoters of yesterday’s show declared the World Cup was already in Sri Lanka’s custody even before a ball could be bowled.
An all-female dance troupe led by male vocalist Lahiru Perera rendered a version of what was touted as the World Cup rocker titled “Come Let’s Conquer” for Sangakkara, who was incidentally late for its maiden presentation a few minutes earlier.
Organisers of the show Sri Lanka Cricket believe that the song with its wild-swing lyrics and the traditional big-match beat would spur the team and catch up with fans as the World Cup draws near. The song will be on air from today and how far it would appeal to fans will be a matter for debate. Sangakkara would know it may count for little on the long run with pundits yet to pick on a firm favourite that will be on song.

Sri Lanka’s Cricket World Cup highs and lows

Sri Lanka have featured in all previous World Cups, winning the tournament once in 1996 and finishing as runners-up in 2007. They were semi-finalist in 2003.

Since 1975, Sri Lanka have played 57 World Cup matches, winning 25 and losing 30. One match ended with no-result and another, a tie.
Sri Lanka scored the second highest total in World Cup history when they made 398/5 in 50 overs, at a run rate of 7.96 against Kenya in Kandy on March 06, 1996. India holds the record for the highest World Cup total with their 413/5 in 50 overs against Bermuda in Port of Spain, Trinidad during the 2007 World Cup.

Only 14 teams have been shot-out for a total below 100. Sri Lanka feature once on that list after they were bowled out for 86 in 37.2 overs by the West Indies in Manchester, England during the 1975 World Cup. Sri Lanka have dismissed three teams for less than a 100 runs – Canada 36 all-out in 2003, Ireland 77 all-out in 2007 and Bermuda 78 all-out in 2007.
When they defeated Bermuda by 243 runs in the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, it became the third largest victory by margin of runs. India’s 257 run win against Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup is the largest victory by way of runs. Australia hold the second spot as a result of their 256 run win over Namibia in 2003.
Sri Lanka’s two-run win over England in Antigua in 2007 is third on the list of victories by the smallest margin of runs. Australia’s one-run win over India in 1987 and 1992 tops the list.

No other batsman has scored more runs for Sri Lanka in World Cups than Sanath Jayasuriya. With 1165 runs (3x100s – 6x50s) from 38 matches, at an average of 34.26 and a strike-rate of 90.66, Jayasuriya sits at number four on the list of highest run scorers in World Cup history. Brian Lara (1225 runs), Ricky Ponting (1537 runs) and Sachin Tendulkar (1796 runs) top the list.

Aravinda De Silva’s 145 from just 115 balls (14x4s – 5x6s) against Kenya in Kandy in 1996 is the highest score by a Sri Lankan in all World Cups.
Arjuna Ranatunga has the best average (46.14 from 30 matches) amongst Sri Lankan batsmen who have played at least 10 World Cup innings. He also has the most ducks by a Sri Lankan batsman (3).

Jayasuriya’s three World Cup centuries is the most by a Sri Lankan batsman in all World Cups. Marvan Atapattu and Aravinda de Silva have two World Cup centuries apiece.

Mahela Jayawardene is third on the list of batsmen who have scored most runs in a single World Cup tournament. In 2007 he amassed 548 runs (1x100s – 4x50s) from 11 matches. Mathew Hayden with 659 runs (3x100s – 1x50s) from 11 matches in 2007 and Sachin Tendulkar with 673 runs (1x100s – 6x50s) from 11 in matches in 2003 top the list.

Muttiah Muralitharan is third on the list of highest wicket takers in all World Cup tournaments. He has 53 wickets from 31 matches at an average of 19.69. Wasim Akram (55 wickets) and Glenn McGrath (71 wickets) top the list.

Chaminda Vaas’ 6/25 in 9.1 overs vs Bangladesh at the 2003 World Cup saw him take a hat-trick off the first three balls of the match. Those figures remain the best by a Sri Lankan bowler at a World Cup tournament. The left-arm opening bowler finished the 2003 World Cup with 23 wickets in 10 matches, along with Muralitharan (23 wickets in the 2007 World Cup) they are second on the list of highest wicket-takers in a single World Cup tournament. Glenn McGrath tops the list with 26 wickets from 11 matches at the 2007 World Cup.

Right-arm fast bowler Ashantha de Mel is one of only four bowlers to have taken a five-wicket haul twice. He also conceded 97 runs in a 10-over spell against the West Indies in the 1987 World Cup, which is the second most expensive bowling figures at a World Cup.

Lasith Malinga is the only bowler in World Cup history and the history of the game to have taken four wickets in four consecutive balls. Malinga achieved the feat against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup.
With 32 dismissals (26xcatches – 6xstumpings) from 21 matches, Kumar Sangakkara is second on the list of wicket-keepers with the most dismissals. Adam Gilchrist tops the list with 52 dismissals (45xcatches – 7xstumpings) from 31 matches. Sangakkara’s 17 dismissals in the 2003 World Cup is only second best to Adam Gilchrist’s 21 dismissals at the 2003 World Cup on the list of most dismissals by a wicket-keeper in a single World Cup tournament.

Sanath Jayasuriya has taken the second highest number of catches by a fielder in all World Cups. His 18 catches is bettered by Ricky Ponting’s 25 catches.

Pakistanis love to see Jayasuriya in action

Cricket crazy people in Pakistan, specially Panjabi people are disappointed by not seeing the Master Blaster Sanath Jayasuriya in the Sri Lanka squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup which starts on February 19.

Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif said so when he met the Sri Lankan Parliamentary delegation headed by the Parliament Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa at the Sri Lanka – Pakistan Parliamentarians Friendship Association meeting in Pakistan. The people of Pakistan love to see Jayasuriya’s hurricane batting and were eagerly waiting to see the 1996 world cup hero in action in familiar sub continent pitches according to the sports loving Chief Minister. Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari said that he is sorry for the inconvenience that was caused due to the terror attack on Sri Lanka team in 2009 and both him and Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani raised concerns about re commencing cricket matches between Sri Lanka and Pakistan teams in Pakistan.

The Lankan delegation included Urban Affairs Senior Minister A H M Fowzie, Parliamentarians A H M Aswar, Wijayakala Maheshwaran and Kamala Ranatunga, Parliament Deputy Secretary General Dhammika Dissanayake and the Speaker’s wife Chandra Malini Rajapaksa.
