Tamil Engineer Chandrasekaran Muralitharan and Family Among 39 Australians Missing in Deadly Nepal Floods
Sydney-based Tamil engineer Chandrasekaran Muralitharan, his wife Shylaja and their two young sons are among at least 39 Australians reported missing following the catastrophic floods that have devastated Nepal.
Chandrasekaran Muralitharan, 47, his wife Shylaja Muralitharan, 42, and their sons Ashwin, 14, and Aarush, 11, have been unaccounted for since devastating flash floods struck the Nepal–Tibet border region on Wednesday.
The family was taking part in a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and was travelling with a group organised by Himalayan Glacier Adventures. According to family members, contact with them was lost shortly after breakfast as the group prepared to travel towards an immigration checkpoint near the Tibet–Nepal border.
The Muralitharan family is based in Sydney and is well known within the local community. Chandrasekaran is a Chartered Professional Engineer and works in the geotechnical engineering sector in Sydney. His professional profile lists him with Foundation Earth Sciences.
Originally from Sri Lanka, Chandrasekaran is an engineering graduate of the University of Moratuwa and an old boy of St. Patrick’s College, Jaffna.
Family members continue to hold hope that Chandrasekaran, Shylaja, Ashwin and Aarush will be located safely. Shylaja's sister told Australian media that the family remained “worried, but hopeful” as rescue and search operations continue across the devastated region.
The disaster has caused enormous destruction across Nepal, with entire villages, roads and bridges swept away. Nepalese authorities said on Friday that the death toll had risen to 469, while more than 1,000 people remain unaccounted for.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has confirmed that at least 39 Australians remain missing and said Australian officials are urgently working to establish their whereabouts and welfare. The Australian Government has also deployed additional consular and humanitarian personnel to Nepal and announced a $5 million assistance package for communities affected by the disaster.
The Tamil Australian community joins the families and friends of all those missing in hoping and praying for their safe return as rescue efforts continue.
