There is an Arabic letter which has the sound of Z. ز Hindi also has a letter (ज़) for the Z sound. Same is the case with the Punjabi language which has the letter ਜ਼ in its alphabet for the Z sound.

If in my own personal writing, I want to write ස with a small z beside for Z, can I do so? It is nice to hear different oppinions, isn't it? I still feel that a letter for Z should be added to the Sinhala alphabet. Otherwise, if there is no need of a letter for the Z sound, then we...

With a Sinhala letter for Z added, the words and names I listed above would become as follows. Z = ized bulldozer = buldozar eka zebra = zeebraawa New Zealand = Nawa Zeelanthaya Zahira - Zahira Zachary - Zaaekaree Hazel - Hezal Miyazaki - Miyazaaki Benazir - Benazir Zimbabwe - Zimbaabwe...

Shenu, As much I feel a letter with a Z sound should be added in the Sinhala alphabet and put in use, I will try to see it from your point of view. Okay.. If there is no need of a letter for Z in the Sinhala alphabet, then why do we need ෆ then? As of now we use ස for both S and Z. So if...

I don't know I can give you 15, but I can say some loan words which have sa in place of za. Z = ised bulldozer = buldosar eka zebra = seebraawa New Zealand = Nawa Seelanthaya Also some non Sinhala names/place names which have Z but written with sa when transliterated in Sinhala script...

What do you mean no necessity of that letter? I think it would be good of a letter for the Z sound was added to the Sinhala alphabet and put to use.

I think I like your idea better. Please can you post another picture of your proposed letter for Z with the pilis added? ie: z za zaa zae zaae zi zee etc

There is already a letter ෆ which has been used in Sinhala for the F sound since the last 30 years. So why not have a letter for the Z sound? :)

Dear MuslimLankan, Please can yiu post another pic of your new letter, this time with the pilis? ie: z za zaa zae zaeae zi zee zu zoo ze zE zo zO It would also be nice if we can see a picture of your new letter in different fonts! Will you do this for us?

I know. But reading Sinhala newspapers, I have seen words and names with the Z sound written in Sinhala and in them, the letter sa would be used for za. ie: New Zealand would become Nava Seelanthaya in Sinhala. Even most of the Sinhalese people I know will pronounce the Z sound like an S...

With the new Z letter we can write loanwords such as, zeebraava, buldozar eka, names such as Zahir, De Zoysa, Hazel and Miyazaki and place names such as New Zealand (Nava Zeelantha), Zaire, Zimbabwe, Zurich, and Balzac. It would be great if that letter was added to the Sinhala alphabet.
