It's nice city. That's the starting point to the way onwards to Machu Picchu. Usually people stay for two or three days in Cusco to acclimatize to the high altitude conditions.
From Cusco you drive down to Ollantaytambo and take the nice Vistadome tourist train from to Aguas Calientes. There's a cheaper standard train too. Then it's a short bus ride to Machu Picchu. Only one or two night stay in Aguas Calientes is required, It's a small town. THe weather in Machu Pichu is highly variable. The day we arrived it was raining like hell. We though we can never make it to Machu Picchu. The guide said he will be at the hotel at 5AM whether rains or not we are going. Fortunately the rains ceased, and we had sunshine till about 3PM. It was lovely.
PLs feel free to ask for any information. We took nearly 5 weeks and covered from Brazil, Argentina (Iguazu Falls from Both sides - stunning), Chile - Patagonia (covered upto further south than Tierra Del Fugo), the Amazon jungles and finally Peru. Once you visit South America you finish up the lot - otherwise no point. All these countries are beautiful. The scenery in Patagonia, including Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the most beautiful sights.
