Viruses mutate all the time. It's just pot luck whether a mutation will be beneficial to us. But it has happened before with SARS. That's why SARS dropped out.
One mutation with 29 nucleotide deletion in the ORF8 (Open reading Frame 8 containing about 121 amino acids) caused the virus to be much more potent, but at the same time it lost the ability to infect humans like before. That was the downfall of the SARS virus.
The current SARS-Cov_2 virus has thousands of mutations as expected, and only the thorough scientific research by the media personnel who assess the virulence is known. Not by the scientists.

A variant is nothing to be alarmed of. It simply means that it differs from a reference virus. Had you read my posts earlier I always stressed that there's ONE and ONLY ONE strain of the Wuhan virus. Many laughed at me, because all the UK media was referring to strains at that time. Some did PM me the links of those news.
What happened much later? The word "Strain" is now unheard of and got replaced with the word "Variant". It's the right thing to do by the British scientists and later came in the term VOC (Variants Of Concern).
Even though a variant has a changed genome sequence from the reference virus, it does NOT necessarily imply that the phenotype of the virus got changed.
So just don't get scared when you happen to see the term variant. It doesn't mean it's more virulent - unless proven so.
