Also look at the stuff the missions had to deal with those days. Today it's LGBT and LGBT. And then more LGBT.

It's not hard to get there but ONLY IF you make a few changes in your lifestyle. Ditch Sinhala from your daily life as much as possible, to begin with. (Here we go now the patriots will get fired up).
Secondly, don't give a rat's ass to those who criticize two locals speaking in English (that's because they can't, or don't want others to master the language). Speak in English whenever the opportunity arises.
Thirdly, completely stop watching Sinhala television. Get your daily dose of garbage from English channels. Get a sledgehammer and reduce to dust your collection of bus songs.
That's just the beginning only.

Obviously it is average English when I watch the video again today. But my English fluency on that time was below this level. As someone else has mentioned in a reply to this thread, I was also a Sri Lankan, who has never put my foot away from home land those days and went to a small government school.

But I set my goal with this speech and I was success even without step on abroad. Amazing thing is someone has replied that Dr. Mahim Mendis's English also good and he was one of my lecturer in the open university. His guidance and instructions helped me lot to improve my knowledge and skills.
