There are a whole bunch of people on there who have never stepped into the country, another lot who are LTTE sympathizers and a bunch of people who get triggered and want to fight everyone.

Don't get me wrong there are some people who are rational and dont have extremist views but they are a minority.

Having been on Reddit and Elakiri for a long time I would say that Elakiri is far less toxic.

This is true. I have been on reddit and elakiri more than 10 years I guess. Elakiri is definitely less toxic. Basically the science/art/languages /etc related subreddits are the places you want to go without being exposed to the suppression of majority considering they are not accurate all the time. r/srilanka is the same. There are open minded people there. Usually they dont get triggered easily. Thre is also a bunch of people as mentioned earlier who couldnt have stepped into the country or LTTE sympathizing diaspora. Because either their views are conjectural or they distort or misrepresent the reality on the ground on purpose. Elakiri is the same but the majority either live in sri lanka or used to live in sri lanka. So always there is some kind of close to accurate representation of whats going on here. And you know, people write in sinhala here.
