Sri Lanka faces backlog of over 100,000 vehicles without number plates​

The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has been unable to issue license plates for more than 100,000 newly registered vehicles due to the suspension of number plate printing for the past six months, officials said.

A DMT spokesperson said the largest share of the backlog is motorcycles, totaling 127,745 units, followed by 26,894 cars, 5,809 three-wheelers, 1,868 dual-purpose vehicles, and 2,122 land vehicles.

The spokesperson added that 25,526 electric vehicles are also among the newly registered fleet awaiting plates, including 3,222 electric cars, 155 three-wheelers, 22,133 motorcycles, and 5 vans.

The suspension has led to a sharp increase in fees charged by private businesses that produce number plates, with costs rising without regulation.

Authorities said the government plans to award the task of license plate printing to a private company through a tender process
