The rhino at Dehiwala Zoo appears to be missing his horn. This picture was taken two weeks ago by a zoo visitor. Rhino horns are considered as valuable ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. Due to the rumour that rhino horn powder had cured a Vietnamese politician's cancer, rhino horns are currently traded on the Vietnamese black market for up to $100,000/kg, more than their weight in gold. What happened to the horn of this majestic wild creature?
ALBINO COBRAS are commercially valuable animals in the illegal wildlife trade. In July 2014, a White Cobra was reported missing at Dehiwala Zoo, stolen from a secure area. When the police began to close in on suspects within the Zoo Department, the missing animal was returned to the Zoo. Google: “White Cobra Dehiwala Zoo” for more info!
This is Tony. He was born in captivity at Dehiwala Zoo and raised by his keepers because his mother rejected him. Or so they say. He has been in solitary confinement for a number of years, locked in a prison cell 24 hours a day with no interaction or stimulus. Is this how Sri Lanka looks after the animals in State care? The Zoo Department has failed its duty of care to Tony.
