@imhotep, do you know anything about this mysterious brain illness.
It's not new... But still unsolved. Post-mortems of those who died didn't point to a mystery, but known pathological conditions, but possibly misdiagnosed while treatment.
Earlier suspected to be CJD but now they suspect something in the environment that might be the trigger, but again not proven.
But a practising neurologist in the New-Brunswick area has stated that he had noticed similar cases as early as 2003.
Now the cases are on the increase. All genders are affected with an average age of 59 years but some are young around 18 years. Recent outbreak mostly young. :(

I saw an academic stating that Omicron will not be infectious within 5 days in popular news channel. He said that two days prior to symptoms and two days after symptoms are the infectious time. This may be the reason that US reduced time for isolation of workers from 7 to 5. In that context it seems illogical to quarantine more than 10 days when you travel abroad.? eg UK. https://inews.co.uk/news/self-isola...-increase-cases-staff-shortages-ukhsa-1379209

Just check how Omicron went to NZ via a traveller from the UK, fully vaccinated with a mRNA vaccine. No other Covid-19 infections have been identified from the flight. 10 days is just the margin of isolation for overseas travel if you don't want to import the virus. Otherwise let anyone in and take the risk. That's what many countries will have to do having no other choice. It's two years of lockdown now.
China has much longer isolation period with three tests. They have a zero Covid policy.

PS: For Omicron - The median incubation period of Omicron is three days. Note that it's anything between zero to eight days depending on the viral load.
The CDC recommendation is to do a PCR from 5 to 7 days if you are fully vaccinated.

The new variants are less severe arn’t they?
That doesn't imply that every new variant that might pop up is going to be less severe. Scientists agree that the Omicron is quite odd. It does not obey any selection logic, It originated from an immuno-compromised patient, also possibly with a nudge from antiviral treatments that promoted mutations. Some effects of the mutations of Omicron annihilates each other resulting in it's RBD affinity for ACE-2 is decreased. That's why it's less virulent.

It might be not the case for the next one. Assuming if Omicron leads to Delta being wiped out there's going to be some chance. But one can only speculate. As I mentioned before, there are two camps already. Some argue Delta will be phased out, but others argue Omicron will fade out & Delta will dominate again. Both have valid arguments and reasons. Let's hope for the best. (y)
