Prior to domestication, sheep fleece was different. There are still several breeds of wild sheep that don’t have domesticated-style fleece, in fact.Undomesticated sheep would grow their fleece out during the autumn and winter, to keep themselves warm, similar to how other animals grow thick winter coats. Then, when the weather warmed up, they’d drop their fleece - shedding it, like dogs do.They didn’t shed it cleanly or in large pieces, though, so the people who started keeping sheep wanted wool that they didn’t have to follow the sheep around to get, and they wanted it in sizes that were easier to get useful material out of without a whole lot of effort. So the sheep that grew thicker, nicer wool were bred with sheep that didn’t drop as much wool, until we ended up with a sheep that doesn’t drop its wool at all and has very nice wool.
