Here's a brief of the treatments.

1. Naltrexone - The normal first line of treatment. - Those on opioid medications should not take this drug. Mainly because this drug suppress alcohol cravings by blocking the effects of natural opioids.

2. Acamprosate (Campral) - Works by changing the brain chemistry so to reduce the desire. - But unlike Naltrexone you should take Campral once you stop drinking.

3. Disulfuram (Antabuse) - This prevents alcohol being metaboised, so it makes you sick if you drink alcohol.

There are other drugs like Topiramate (Topamax) and Gabapentin (Neurontin) too.

First seek medical advice before taking any of the drug regimes.

PS: @silentsahan - Friend, I drink too. Probably you have not seen or heard the bad consequences of it. I have seen enough families torn apart with kids suffering. That's where drugs can help to restore some sanity.

IMO Naltrexone and Acamprosate are not that effective because even while taking them you drink in different quantities unless you have a great willpower to control yourself. If you had that willpower in the first place you will not seek a medical solution to stop drinking.

If someone wants to go hardcore Disulfiram would be the solution. Either you drink or don't drink at all.
