If Parliament is not convened on 07, I will be acting on my own will” - Speaker
Today (02) Speaker of Parliament Mr. Karu Jayasuriya has informed the Parliamentary members that if the President will not convene the Parliament on the coming 07, he will be acting on his own will to convene the Parliament.
The Speaker has emphasized that since he is legally obliged to convene the Parliament in terms of the Constitution, per request by majority of the members he will be making a straight decision.
The Speaker has also said that within the democratic framework the President has been given the opportunity to convene the Parliament.
He has said before the members that he will be intervening in the process of protecting the Parliamentary democracy, and nobody is entitled to act unconstitutionally.
Today, a written request has been made to the Speaker with 118 members of Parliament to intervene in the procedure of convening the Parliament.
Many party representatives, including the United National Party, the JVP, the Tamil National Alliance and the Muslim Congress were present in the meeting.
Meanwhile, Mahinda’s party is engaging in spreading rumours against the Speaker, and reportedly an attempt to control Mr. Karu Jayasuriya through people like Arvin Weerakkodi, Milinda Moragoda is also being carried out.
Mahinda’s party emphasizes that the Speaker cannot be allowed to remain above the President.
However, Mr. Karu Jayasuriya has said to the members that both constitutionally and morally the President has been allowed to make a decision, and that if the President does not intervene in the process of protecting the Parliamentary democracy, he will.
