"Maithripala Asleep" - JVP Decides To Take To Streets
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has decided to take to streets demanding the newly formed government to take stern action against those who were responsible for bribery and corruption under previous UPFA government.
Although one week has passed after the formation of the new government, no serious action has been taken against any person over bribery and corruption. However, complaints are being lodged on a daily basis by various parties with the Bribery Commission – a body that has been set up to investigate into bribery and corruption allegations.
So far, five people – who had bribery and corruption allegations – have left the country from the country’s main airport, a spokesman of the JVP told Asian Mirror on Sunday. One of the five is President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s brother, Basil Rajapaksa, who was formerly the Economic Development Minister.
The spokesman also added that JVP would constantly push the government in this regard at the National Advisory Council meeting.
Parallel to that process, he added, the JVP would mobilize the masses to pressurize the government to take stern action against those who embezzled public money.
This has come in a context where a sense of ‘reconciliation’ is being development between President Maithripala Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as an outcome of the smooth transfer of party leadership. The JVP said the delay in the law enforcement process has already raised doubts in the minds of people.
