    ew details revealed Saturday by Malaysia's Prime Minister provide a clearer chronology about what may have happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 between its takeoff and its last known spotting seven hours later.Here's how experts reconstructed key moments of the flight, according to CNN aviation and airline correspondent Richard Quest. The flight disappeared more than a week ago with 239 people aboard.

    Takeoff: 12:41 a.m.

    All tracking systems are working as the Boeing 777-200ER takes off from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur, headed to Beijing, on Saturday, March 8.

    ACARS sends communication: 1:07 a.m.

    About a half-hour after takeoff, one of the plane's communication systems sends what turns out to be its last communication, according to the CEO of Malaysia Airlines, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya.The Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System is the onboard computer that collects information -- a lot of it -- about the plane's and the pilot's performance. It's akin to computers now in automobiles that track oil levels and engine performance.Aboard aircraft, ACARS computers measure thousands of data and send the information via satellite to the airline, the engine manufacturer and other authorized parties, Quest said.

    The information is useful for operations, maintenance, scheduling and performance purposes, Quest said."Your boss will know how you've flown the plane because ACARS will have told them," Quest said.

    Voice check-in: 1:19 a.m.

    Someone in the plane's cockpit makes a voice check-in with air-traffic controllers as the airliner was apparently leaving Malaysian airspace and entering Vietnamese airspace."All right, good night" were the final words from the cockpit, said Zulazri Mohd Ahnuar, a Malaysian civil aviation officer.

    It's unclear who in the cockpit spoke those words, but the phrase of "good night" is the radio parlance used by pilots when executing a handover from one airspace to another, Quest said."That is normal. That happens a gazillion times," Quest said. " 'All right, good night' is a pleasantry at the end of radio communication."It remains unclear, however, whether Vietnamese air traffic controllers had any contact with the plane during the handoff, Quest said.

    Transponder off: 1:21 a.m.

    A transponder sends electronic messages from the airplane: "squawks" to radar systems about the plane's flight number, altitude, speed and heading.

    This is enormously useful information to air-traffic controllers who are looking at scores of blips on their screen, and each blip is a plane emitting identifying information, thanks to the transponder.The transponder, apparently switched off, stropped responding at 1:21 a.m., said Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, director of the Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation.

    "Now the plane is flying blind from the ground's point of view," Quest said. "If there is radar there, the radar will see a blip, but they won't know who it is, where they are going. They will just now know it's there."

    That's because the transponder isn't sending identifying information about the plane. Shutting off the transponder is a simple turn of a switch in the cockpit, Quest said."The air-traffic controller should notice. I suppose it would cause alarm. ... (The information from) a plane that you're monitoring all of a sudden disappears," Quest said.

    Civilian radar loses contact with plane: about 1:30 a.m.

    Air traffic controllers in Subang, outside Kuala Lumpur, say they lost contact with the plane over the Gulf of Thailand between Malaysia and Vietnam at coordinates 06 55 15 N and 103 34 43 E.

    Expected ACARS transmission doesn't happen: 1:37 a.m.

    The ACARS was supposed to transmit a half-hour after it last did so.Therefore, it was supposed to transmit at 1:37 a.m. -- but it didn't, Yahya said,So, the ACARS was shut down sometime between 1:07 and 1:37 a.m.

    It's a significant event: Turning off ACARS takes know-how, Quest said.If the flight were hijacked or a target of terrorism, cutting off ACARS would be a strategic move because the system reports to satellites anything being done to the aircraft, Quest said.

    Military radar detection: 2:40 a.m.

    Though the Malaysian plane is not transmitting information -- by ACARS or transponder -- radar on the ground or elsewhere can still detect a plane in the air.

    According to a Malaysian Air Force official, military radar tracked the plane as it passed over the small island of Pulau Perak in the Strait of Malacca.
    At this point, the plane was now hundreds of miles off-course. In fact, it was on the other side of the Malaysian Peninsula.

    Military radar showed that the jetliner flew in a westerly direction back over the Malaysian peninsula, Najib said. It is then believed to have either turned northwest toward the Bay of Bengal or southwest elsewhere into the Indian Ocean, he said.This was the last time any civilian or military radar tracked the aircraft.The focus now is searching for the missing flight in the southern Indian Ocean, according to a U.S. official.

    "The southern scenario seems more plausible," the official said.The Malaysian military is now handing over its raw radar data to U.S. and UK officials, apparently setting aside concerns about any sensitive military intelligence.Quest called this sharing of information a "huge" development in the case."They don't want anyone to know how good their radar is. They obviously decided that doesn't matter," he said.

    "We don't know much about the Malaysian military, and that has been one of the issues," Quest added. "It appears that Malaysia was providing an interpretation of the analysis -- and not the raw data. Now they are handing over the raw data."

    Satellite 'handshakes': 8:11 a.m.

    Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Raza revealed Saturday that a satellite tracked the plane at 8:11 a.m., more than seven hours after takeoff.

    Najib didn't provide details on the satellite tracking, but it appears that orbiters high above the ocean detected the plane as the satellite or satellites attempted a series of "handshakes" -- or electronic connections -- with the plane below, Quest said.It's likely that the plane didn't complete the handshake because its communication systems were disabled, Quest said. It's also possible that the airline doesn't subscribe to that part of the satellite system, he said.

    Nevertheless, the satellites would have been able to trace a plane flying below them and would have extended an electronic message equivalent to a hailing: "There's a plane: Hello, hello, hello? Do you have anything for us?" Quest said.

    The Prime Minister said the "raw satellite data" confirm that the plane was Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, along with the UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch, concur, Najib said."Due to the type of satellite data, we are unable to confirm the precise location of the plane when it last made contact with the satellite," Najib said.

    Authorities believe the plane was in one of two flight "corridors": a northern route stretching to northern Thailand, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan and a southern route toward Indonesia and the southern Indian Ocean.More than a week after its takeoff, however, the whereabouts of the plane remain a mystery.​

    What happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?

    About an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday, March 8, a Boeing 777-200ER jetliner went missing while flying to Beijing.

    The Boeing 777-200ER takes off from Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, at 12:41 a.m. Saturday (12:41 p.m. Friday ET).The red-eye flight is scheduled to arrive in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. the same day, after a roughly 2,700-mile (4,350-kilometer) journey.

    There are 239 people on board: 227 passengers and 12 crew members. Five of the passengers are younger than 5 years old.

    Lost contact, apparent course change

    Around 1:30 a.m., air traffic controllers in Subang, outside Kuala Lumpur, lose contact with the plane over the sea between Malaysia and Vietnam. The plane's transponder, which identifies the aircraft and relays details like altitude and speed to controllers, stops transmitting.

    A senior Malaysian air force official on Tuesday says the flight was hundreds of miles off course and traveling in the opposite direction from its original destination. It was last tracked over over Pulau Perak, a tiny island in the Strait of Malacca at about 2:40 a.m., over an hour after air traffic controllers in Subang lost contact with the aircraft.

    At a news briefing Wednesday, however, Gen. Rodzali Daud, head of the Malaysian Air Force, and other officials say it isn't yet clear whether the object that showed up on military radar flying over the sea northwest of the Malaysian coast early Saturday was the missing plane.


    Adding to the puzzle, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the plane may have continued flying for four hours after its last reported contact, attributing the information to two unidentified sources who were citing data automatically transmitted to the ground from the aircraft's Rolls-Royce-manufactured engines. A senior aviation source with detailed knowledge of the matter told CNN's Richard Quest on Thursday the WSJ account in incorrect. The paper later corrects its story, saying it was satellite data, not engine data, that drove the belief the plane continued to fly.

    Several planes, ships and search crews from 14 countries begin scouring the South China Sea near where the plane was last detected. After debris in the area and an oil slick turn out to be unrelated to the plane, the search area is expanded to include the waters west of Malaysia. China's State Administration for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense release satellite photos of possible wreckage, but later announce that the release was a mistake, and the debris in the photos was unrelated to Flight 370.

    Flight 370 was fueled for a trip to Beijing. Based on fuel estimates, the aircraft could have flown an additional 2,500 miles after the point of last contact.

    Malaysian authorities said Thursday they believe several "pings" of data from the airliner's service data system, known as ACARS, transmitted to satellites in the four to five hours after the last transponder signal, a senior U.S. official told CNN. This new information, combined with known radar data and knowledge of fuel range leads officials to believe the plane may have made it to the Indian Ocean.

    On Friday, electronic and satellite data, conducted by the United States and Malaysian governments, that calculates Flight 370 likely crashed into the Indian Ocean on one of two possible flight paths. Both flight paths assume the aircraft headed west after losing contact with air traffic controllers, and crossed the Malay peninsula. One flight path suggests the plane crashed into the Bay of Bengal off the coast of India, and the other has it crashing in the Indian Ocean, according to the analysis.

    Satellite 'handshakes' narrow search

    As the focus of the investigation shifts, so too does the focus of the search. "The plane's last communication with the satellite was in one of two possible corridors: a northern corridor stretching approximately from the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to northern Thailand, or a southern corridor stretching approximately from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean,"

    Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak said Saturday. The map to the left, based on a handout from the Prime Minister's office, highlights the focused search area - much of which falls over land. While official contact was lost with Flight 370 about 45 minutes after takeoff, officials believe a combination of military radar data and a satellite-based system called ACARS provide hints regarding the path of the plane. Though no actual data was transmitted via satellite, it still appears to have made contact through hourly 'handshakes,' the last instance being at 8:11 a.m. local time somewhere along the red lines.​

    Claims today that the missing Malaysian Airlines jet dropped to an altitude of 5,000ft to avoid radar lends credibility to reports by villagers that they saw bright lights and loud noises at about the time the aircraft is thought to have made a 'U-turn'.Investigators told a Malaysian newspaper that the Boeing 777 had dropped to a lower altitude to avoid ground radar, using the surrounding terrain as a sonar barrier.

    This type of flying is considered to be dangerous and risky, because it places tremendous pressure on the frame of the aircraft - and flying low at night without radar assistance could lead to the plane crashing into trees or mountains.
