This is a nostalgic story about hostel life at **Royal College, Colombo** around 2007–2009. Here's what it says:2008 අවුරුද්දෙ නිවාඩු මාසවලයි, වෙලාවකට long weekend වැටුණමයි hostel එකේ හිටියොත් සෙනසුරාදා හවසට වගේ බම්බා පැත්තෙම අපි සෙට් එක රවුමක් ගහල එනවා. MC එකටත් අනිවා යනවා හැබැයි KFC එකෙන් නම් කෑවෙ කලාතුරකින්. ඔය බත් මගුල වැඩි ගතියක් නෑ.
එ් දවස්වල 999 ට තිබ්බා කුකුළෙක්ම ඉන්න චිකන් බකට් එක. සෙට් එකම සල්ලි දැම්මොත් අන්න එ්ක තමයි කන්නෙ. තව 99 ට තිබ්බා ලීටර් එක හමාරෙ coke එහෙම. ඔය පැත්තෙ යද්දි විශේෂ තැනකින් කියල වැඩිපුරම කරේ McDonald's ගිහින් රු. 30 ට තිබ්බ ලොකු Ice Cream එක කාපු එක.
2007 දි 11 වසරෙ හිටපු අපිත් එක්ක වලියක් දාගෙන prefect ලා සෙට් එකම අස් කරල දැම්මා. ඉතින් 2008 අවුරුද්දට hostel prefect ලා 12 ක්ම ගත්තා විතරක් නෙවෙයි, අපිට උඩින් මොකෙක්වත් හිටියෙ නෑ. පට්ටම freedom එකක් තිබ්බෙ. Prefect සෙට් එකටම මැෂින් කට්ටක් තිබ්බා P3 එකක්ද කොහෙද. එ්කට internet cafe වලින් බාන වැල්, pen වලට අැවිත් දාගෙන බලනවා. අපේ කීප දෙනෙක් media unit හිටපු නිසා projector එකකුත් තිබ්බෙ අපේ භාරෙ වගේ. කට්ටිය අඩු දවස්වලට main room එකේ බිත්තියට ගහල film CD බලනවා. නිවාඩු කාලවල හවසට රෑට ඉතින් මුළු Royal එකම අපේ වගේ තමයි. අාතල් කාලෙ.
කෑම නම් ඔය ගණන් තමයි කොහොමත්. රෑට එළියට කන්ඩ යනවා නම් සාමාන්යයෙන් 100 ක් වගේ තමයි එක්කෙනෙක් දාන්නෙ. Normal කඩවල ඕන තරම් 100-150 ට සුපිරි කොත්තු තිබුණා. බම්බලපිටියට යන පාරෙ තිබ්බා තව Elite කියල කඩයක්. (දැන් එ්ක තමයි අර හෙන තඩි indian restaurant එකක් කරල තියෙන්නෙ.) එ්ක vegetarian වුණාට සුපිරි කෑම වර්ග තිබ්බා. ගොඩක් Vegetarian කෑම වර්ග එකක් 10,20 තමයි. කාලා 5 ට plain tea හරි එළකිරි එකක් 20 ට හරි බොන්න පුළුවන්. රුපියල් 100 ට අඩුවෙන් කොහොමත් කෑම shape.
අා තව පෝය දවසට පොඩි උන් සෙට් එකම එක්කගෙන ගංගාරාමෙ යනවා. ගිහින් ඉස්සො වඩේ කනවා රුපියල් 10 ට. පොඩි වඩේ එකක් රුපියල් 2 යි. කඩල තිබ්බා 10 ට 20 ට දාගෙන කන්න පුළුවන්. තව අඹ, පේර, අන්නාසි බෑග් 10 ට 20 ට.
කැරිම අාතල් එක ඉරිදට pool බහින එක තමයි. Scouting කරන අයට 12 - 3 අතර Pool entrance free. පූල් එකේ පිස්සු නටල අැවිත් කන්ඩ Pool කැන්ටිමේ කෑම ලාබයි විතරක් නෙවෙයි, 50 ට fried rice එකක් එහෙම එකක් අරගෙන පිඟන් 3 කට දා ගන්න පුළුවන්. ඉන්න බුවා අපිත් එක්ක fit නිසා පිඟන් 3 ටම සාමාන්ය rice එකක් විතරම බත් දානවා. කාල අැවිල්ලා නිදා ගන්නවා හවස් වෙනකල්.
අා තව හොඳ movie එකක් එහෙම අාවාම අැවිදලා Savoy ගිහින් බලල එනවා. Rab ne banadi jodi දෙපාරක්ම බැලුවා. ටිකට් එකත් 150 ද කොහෙද.
2008 අන්තිම වෙද්දි ඉස්කෝලෙත් පටන් ගත්තා, එ් මදිවට යුද්ධ පකක් අැවිත් class වලට අැරෙන්න එළියට යන්න දුන්නෙම නෑ. 6.30 න් පස්සෙ කොහොමත් එළියට යන්ඩ බෑ. එ් නිසා අර අාතල් night life එක නිකන්ම මග අැරිලා ගියා. 2009 අග වෙද්දි එ් සීන් අඩු වුණාට exam වැඩයි, කෑලියි, වෙන වෙන වගකීම් මගුල් නිසා අර තරම් fit එකක් තිබ්බෙ නෑ. ඉතින් කට්ටියම යන්න සෙට් වුණේ මාර කලාතුරකින්. ගොඩක් වෙලාවට තුන හතරක් විතරයි. එහෙම වුණාම ලොකු අාතල් එකක් නෑනෙ.

They always visited **Majestic City** mall, but rarely ate at KFC there — thought it was overpriced and not worth it. The big deal at KFC was the whole chicken bucket for Rs. 999, which they'd split costs on. A 1.5L Coke was Rs. 99. The real highlight though was walking over to McDonald's and getting a large ice cream for Rs. 30.
**The prefect power trip**
In 2007 (Grade 11), the whole group had a falling out with the prefects and got them all removed. So in 2008 (Grade 12), they became the hostel prefects themselves — all 12 of them — with no seniors above them. Total freedom. The prefect group had a shared PC (a Pentium 3 or something), they'd download stuff from internet cafes onto pen drives and watch on it. Some of them were in the media unit, so they also had a projector under their control — they'd watch film CDs projected onto the wall in the main room. During holidays, the whole of Royal felt like it was theirs. Good times.
**Food budget**
Eating out at night usually cost about Rs. 100 per person. Normal shops had great kottu for Rs. 100–150. There was a place called **Elite** on the way to Bambalapitiya — now converted into a fancy Indian restaurant — which was vegetarian but had excellent food. Most items were Rs. 10–20, and you could have plain tea or milk tea for Rs. 20. A full meal under Rs. 100 was easily doable.
**Poya day ritual**
On Poya (full moon) days, they'd take the younger kids to **Gangarama temple**. There they'd eat isso wade (prawn fritters) for Rs. 10, small vade for Rs. 2, and kadala (chickpeas) for Rs. 10–20. Bags of mango, guava, and pineapple were Rs. 10–20 too.
**Sunday pool sessions**
Sunday pool sessions were a favourite. Scouts got free entry from 12–3 PM. After swimming, the pool canteen had cheap food — a fried rice for Rs. 50 that you could stretch across 3 plates. The canteen staff liked them and would give a regular serving of plain rice on each plate too. They'd eat and then sleep until evening.
**Movies**
When a good film came out, they'd walk to **Savoy Cinema**. They watched *Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi* twice. Ticket was around Rs. 150.
**The Hutch phone hack**
Everyone had phones with Hutch SIMs. Hutch didn't charge for the first 3 seconds of a call, so you could shout a couple of words and hang up — essentially free communication. They milked this trick heavily for coordination.
**The end of the golden era**
Late 2008, school got serious, and on top of that the war situation meant they weren't allowed out after 6:30 PM. The fun night life just died off. By late 2009, exams, relationships, and other responsibilities meant the whole group rarely got together anymore — usually just 3 or 4 people, which wasn't the same vibe.
