Always try to learn the philosophical side of Buddhism and try to apply it to your lives. Debating about trivial and prehistoric information like this is a waste of time.
Think of a scenario 2000 years ago when literate people were extremely rare and the only means of information about the outside world you got was from the temple priest. Knowing that the followers were never going to find out, they would've likely added some spice to the stories. Why should we believe in things like this at this time, when things are so different?
Personally, I don't believe that the Buddha was omnipotent, or that he asked people to follow rules or even say pansil. He was obviously a great philosopher and with time people would have worshiped him.
Unfortunately, so much has changed and has been added that today, we find it hard to separate original Buddhism from the later distortions.
So stop fantasizing and worshiping non-existent things and people and try to enjoy life with other people, without making anybody unhappy. Adieu.
