Aspergillus niger is one of the most important microorganisms used in biotechnology. It has been in use already for many decades to produce extracellular (food) enzymes and citric acid. In fact, citric acid and many A. niger enzymes are considered GRAS by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

There was no new treatments for the last 20 years or so, but in last December the FDA approved a topical, non-steroidal, phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor. This hit the markets early 2024.
It's Roflumilast foam 0.3% - (ZORYVE®) which showed to be very effective in the clinical trials. Note, it's a prescription drug.
