It is not that we are incapable of doing international level research in SL, the problem is lack of funding. I did my PhD research in SL, which took me 7 years to complete, because, I had to struggle with funding. I published two papers from SL research in peer reviewed journals, and my research work was internationally qualified, which is why I am now working in US. We have some smart Profs (not all of them) in SL, who can guide students for international level research. So, it has to be the SL government, which should make more effort to put more money in research. But, with this corrupted situation, I don't think it is going to happen in near future. Still, our National Research Council (NRC), has a program, where they select publications from SL scientists, according scientific citation index, and confer presidents awards those scientists. This motivates young undergrads who wish to pursue research in SL. National Science Foundation and NRC is also funding PhDs, post-doctoral fellows and scientists, for research in SL. But, the amount of funding is negligible, when it compares to what we spend here in US.

On the other hand, it is also very hard to survive in our academic system due to the politics. They don't let you to be innovative, instead have to say "yes boss", if you want to survive. From the grant money, some Dr's travel around the world for all kind of workshops, seminars, meetings, etc, and sometimes, they use money for other personnel purposes. If we want to do research in SL, we have to tolerate all this shit, on top of not having a good salary.

Also, sometimes, your ideas could be stolen, and somebody else will be doing it before you (this is everywhere in the world). The trustworthiness of the data generated from research work is always skeptical. What we call international quality research that is being done in all over the world, sometimes is of no quality and fake. When you look from outside, it is a big image, But when you are really into it, you can see both the shit and the good. The rest of the rich world just look down on developing countries like us, assuming that we cannot be smart like them. But, the fact is, rich countries appears to be smart to the rest of the world, not because that they are always really smart, but they have millions of dollars to compete and to cover up.

bit away from the subject of universities, this is about research. i think the governments should facilitate people doing research not necessarily for the mainstream academic qualifications, but for the innovation and development. because some people may have lots of ideas and know the basic concepts of research methodology etc. but don't do masters and phds. governments should make information available from various international sources and help a culture which promotes esearch and development so that there will be more innovations and good research outcomes. that way our researchers can attract more international funding.

agree with you, lots of politics involved in sl universities so it curtails good innovative ideas. also most of the time the students' researches should be aligned with the lecturers' on going researches otherwise they are discouraged. compared to that when i was doing a masters from a university outside sl, i had more freedom in selecting my research topic and thereby i had more control and interest over the whole research.
