    timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2012-13/world-ranking/region/asia/methodology

    (1) Teaching: the learning environment (worth 30 per cent of the overall ranking score)

    (2) Research: volume, income and reputation (worth 30 per cent)
    (3) Citations: research influence (worth 30 per cent)
(4)Industry income: innovation (worth 2.5 per cent)
    (5) International outlook: staff, students and research (worth 7.5 per cent).

There is a huge difference between Sri Lanka Universities and here in terms of research. Here professors are highly encouraged to do research. In fact some excellent profs are removed from teaching undergraduate and they are full time doing research and development. The research is a difficult thing. You have to first study the current knowledge of the world and add top of that. In SL, we did not have access to even IEEE publications those days. Then how to we know that our research is valid or already done by others?

Government and industry fund millions of dollers to research. Even the small companies here support few PhDs and Mscs and lot of collaborations with university. Their students come and work here. In SL, the collaboration between industry and university is very small.

In SL, those days profs hardly earning money. Even final year graduates earn more money than profs as their first salary. Some profs do lot of other business (not related to their work). Some do tuition. Some migrate. Some came to university just to teach and go home. It is a extremely frustrated situation. I think now their salary is ok.

I do not think that there is a issue with undergraduate courses from SL universities (at least for engineering).
The low rank is because of lack of international level research. Unfortunately the ranking is mainly based on that.
Some think that University is a place where merely professionals are developed like a factory. But it is not true. It is all about research and the new knowledge generated.
The industry can not survive without university. In fact here most of the products are originally developed at university (e.g. Genetically modified Canola). The university can not survive without industry (funding and collaboration). We have seen that a strong advanced industry pave the way to to good reputed universities.

    .

It is not that we are incapable of doing international level research in SL, the problem is lack of funding. I did my PhD research in SL, which took me 7 years to complete, because, I had to struggle with funding. I published two papers from SL research in peer reviewed journals, and my research work was internationally qualified, which is why I am now working in US. We have some smart Profs (not all of them) in SL, who can guide students for international level research. So, it has to be the SL government, which should make more effort to put more money in research. But, with this corrupted situation, I don't think it is going to happen in near future. Still, our National Research Council (NRC), has a program, where they select publications from SL scientists, according scientific citation index, and confer presidents awards those scientists. This motivates young undergrads who wish to pursue research in SL. National Science Foundation and NRC is also funding PhDs, post-doctoral fellows and scientists, for research in SL. But, the amount of funding is negligible, when it compares to what we spend here in US.

On the other hand, it is also very hard to survive in our academic system due to the politics. They don't let you to be innovative, instead have to say "yes boss", if you want to survive. From the grant money, some Dr's travel around the world for all kind of workshops, seminars, meetings, etc, and sometimes, they use money for other personnel purposes. If we want to do research in SL, we have to tolerate all this shit, on top of not having a good salary.

Also, sometimes, your ideas could be stolen, and somebody else will be doing it before you (this is everywhere in the world). The trustworthiness of the data generated from research work is always skeptical. What we call international quality research that is being done in all over the world, sometimes is of no quality and fake. When you look from outside, it is a big image, But when you are really into it, you can see both the shit and the good. The rest of the rich world just look down on developing countries like us, assuming that we cannot be smart like them. But, the fact is, rich countries appears to be smart to the rest of the world, not because that they are always really smart, but they have millions of dollars to compete and to cover up.

Agreed brother. I did not say that SL researchers are incapable of doing that. In SL, there are some profs doing good job even with very small funding and facilities. Unfortunately best of them are offered 10 times or more salary + research funding + benefits from other countries. In our time, several profs went to other countries. Some decide to stay because of family connections, love to serve country and other reasons. At one time, we were afraid that there may not be profs to teach us. The situation was very bad.

It is easy to blame SL universities that the ranking is low, but very little try to understand why it happened and try to improve the situation.

In fact, here many professors are from Asian countries including SL. They are doing many innovative things, patents, research papers etc.

I've learned and worked in University of Moratuwa. Can't agree with some of the facts. The quality of education & research is way higher than private uni's here..

Also we are earning a lot by doing consultancy to organizations and many foreign researchers study here...

Thanks for the comment. We just discuss here why ranks of gov. universities are low.

I think nobody can disagree with standard private universities. If fact, there are many private universities in the world.

Lets forget about private universities. It is out of topic.

I have no question with the undergraduate degree. Also some profs doing great research work. we appreciate that.

However in our time, we did not have access to publications such as IEEE /IEE. The industry and university relationship is poor compared to overseas universities.

How many Phds, Msc are funded by industry? In out time, none.

Since i am doing Masters at SLIIT, in here there is a seperate login for IEE, where we can contact a staff person and specifically mention the research paper we want they will provide it. I hope same facility should be available at Mora UCSC but less people use them.

In Sri lanka main problem is, people read for degrees masters phds to add those as titles for them and expect other benefits in career. My advice is not to do a master in that mind set, do a master program to do a good research actually its the main component of any Msc.. you may do Msc in SLIIT Mora or UCSC or even at abroad but your research determines effectiveness of your professional qualification :)
