Sukithapura programme receives green light from Cabinet for 64 projects

The cabinet has approved the implementation of 64 construction projects under the Sukithapura programme.


The proposal made by the Megapolis and Western Development Minister Champika Ranawaka to complete contracts that were awarded last year, which could not be completed due to various factors, and implement programmes for the 2017 financial year, was approved by the cabinet.


Last month the reported that the funds allocated for infrastructure projects in the Western Region was insufficient to begin new proposed projects.


Sukithapura or Sukithapurawara, the major infrastructure development plan for the Western Province was allocated Rs. 10 billion last year. The project is set-up to upgrade infrastructure facilities, develop and beautify 23 townships in the Western Province, paving the way for mega development projects such as the financial city in the region.


The mega project began 70 other development projects last year, twenty percent of which are scheduled to be completed in the next two months. The large spectrum of Sukithapura envisions the initiation of more projects, but sources say the Rs. 4.8 billion allocated by the state for 2017 will only be sufficient to complete existing projects but not to commence new ones.


Towns such as Borella, Kesbewa, Kottawa, Kaduwela, Piliyandala, Battaramulla, Kadawatha, Mahara, Meerigama, Kalutara, Homagama, Maharagama, Kottawa, Horana, Panadura and Bulathsinhala are some areas that will be developed under the project.
Colombo is to be made into a commercial city and all administrative facilities are to be shifted outside the city. The project will also make the necessary infrastructure facilities for this change, officials said.


Projects on a smaller scale such as the relocation of Manning Market in Pettah to Peliyagoda will also come under the Sukithapura project.


Long term goals of the project would be to acquire land for large scale development projects, for specific development projects such as the establishment of a tech city, and transportation hubs.

මෙම ජලාශය නිර්මාණය කරන්නට අඹන්ගඟ හරස්කොට ඉදිකර ඇති කොන්ක්‍රීට් වේල්ලේ දිග මීටර් 375 ක් වන අතර උස මීටර් 58 ක්. ඊට අමතරව දේශීය තාක්ෂණයෙන් නිම වූ උප ප්‍රධාන වේලි දෙකකින්ද මොරගහකන්ද ජලාශය සමන්විතවනවා. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ඉදිවන විශාලතම ජලාශය වන මෙය පරාක්‍රම සමුද්‍රයට වඩා සිව් ගුණයක විශාලත්වයකින් යුක්තයි. මේ වන විට ජලයෙන් පිරෙමින් පවතින මොරගහකන්ද ජලාශයට ගම්මාන 12 ක් ක්‍රමයෙන් යටවෙමින් පවතිනවා.

Sri Lanka tourism arrivals up 13-pct in January 2017, despite airport closure

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals rose 12.9 percent to 219,360 in January 2017 from a year earlier, despite a partial closure of the main airport with renewed momentum from China and the UK.

"This performance has laid to rest fears that the partial airport closure will have an adverse impact on tourism," tourism minister John Amaratunga said in a statement.

"I'm very happy that our efforts to streamline operations so as to minimize the impact of the closure have paid off."

Sri Lanka's main airport in Katunayake is closed until 4.00 pm for runway repairs until April.

Arrivals from Western Europe rose 13.8 percent to 72,500 with UK arrivals up 19.8 percent to 16,253, arrivals from France up 8 percent to 10,666 and Netherlands up 39 percent to 4,457.

German arrivals fell 2.3 percent to 12,471.

East Asian arrivals rose 25 percent to 48,775 with China up 21.8 percent to 31,803 and Japan up 28 percent to 3,134. Indonesia rose 142 percent to 4,529.

South Asia rose 2.4 percent to 41,470 with India up 7.9 percent to 31,173. Maldives fell 18 percent to 5,662.

Eastern Europe rose 16.7 percent to 26,540 with Russia up 23 percent to 10,337 and Ukraine up 24.5 percent to 5,806.

Rs. 161 b expressway: It’s China again

Another massive unsolicited project; loan coming from Exim Bank

In another unsolicited proposal, a Chinese company has been awarded the contract for the construction of the fourth phase of the Central Expressway project.
Under the project, the Central Expressway between Kurunegala and Dambulla spanning 58.7 kilometres of four lanes is to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 161.61 billion, excluding Value Added Tax.

Cabinet approval for the project has been granted to obtain a loan from the Exim Bank of China with the project to be carried out by the China Gezhouba Group of Companies. Sri Lanka will receive a six-year grace period for the repayment of the loan and it will have to be completed in 20 years.
Project Director T.S.H. Abewickrema told the Sunday Times the agreement would be signed next week and work would be started at a ceremony presided over by President Maithripala Sirisena the following week.

She said the project would be completed in three and a half years and would be part of the ‘Rajarata Navodaya’ – the President’s programme for the development of the Polonnaruwa district.

Ms. Abeywickrema said the expressway would include five interchanges at Ridigama, Melsiripura, Galewela and two in Dambulla. There would be 21 bridges, 32 culverts, nine under passes and seven over passes.
