Workers should not be misled by the demands by the parliamentary opposition parties, trade unions and the pseudo-left for “re-negotiation” of the IMF’s demands or the “implementation of austerity measures with the peoples’ consent.” These desperate and cynical calls are designed to dissipate the rising mass anger against the IMF program.

In order to preserve its hard-won pensions and savings and fight the escalating assault on jobs, wages and social conditions, the working class must organise independently of all the parliamentary parties and the trade unions, based on a socialist program.

That is why the Socialist Equality Party (SEP) calls upon workers and rural poor to build their own independent rank-and-file action committees in workplaces, factories, plantations and among the rural masses. A Democratic and Socialist Congress of Workers and Rural Masses, based on delegates elected by these action committees, must be built to develop an independent political movement of the working class and the rural poor for a workers’ and peasants’ government to implement socialist policies.

Such a government would nationalise the banks and the major corporations, including the plantations, placing them under the democratic public control of workers. The wealth of the super-rich would be seized, and foreign debts repudiated. This struggle has to be part of a united movement of the international working class for socialism globally.

    Socialist Equality Party

The Socialist Equality Party is the Sri Lankan section of the International Committee of the Fourth International. Our party fights to build a revolutionary leadership of the working class and to win workers in Australia to the program of socialist internationalism.
