‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Scores 2nd Best Opening Day Of All Time With $121M, 3-Day Now Between $242M-$247M+

    Spider-Man-No-Way-Home-4.jpg

Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home charted the second-best opening day in the history of the domestic box office with $121.5M (including $50M previews) after Avengers: Endgame ($157.4M) and ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($119.1M). That’s also the highest opening day ever for the month of December. This now puts the Jon Watts directed Tom Holland-Zendaya-Benedict Cumberbatch and all-star Spidey villain movie at an estimated $242M$247.5M+ over three days, which would make it the fourth highest U.S./Canada opening of all-time behind Avengers: Endgame ($357.1M), Avengers: Infinity War ($257.7M), and Star Wars: Force Awakens ($247.96M). The expectation is that Saturday eases 40% from Friday+preview’s figure, however, in most cases when we have a box office beast this big, it only gets bigger. Some see Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s weekend beating Force Awakens’ 3-day. Spider-Man: No Way Home also gets a huge hug from moviegoers with an A+ CinemaScore; the best grade ever for a live-action Spider-Man, and the second for the franchise counting the Oscar-winning animation movie, 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Swinging To 3rd Best Domestic Opening Ever With $253M+

    nowayhome.jpg

Sony is calling the opening weekend for Spider-Man: No Way Home at $253M, which is where we first saw it last night. Again, that’s the best December domestic opening, best ever for Sony, 3rd best ever among all films beating 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens domestic opening of $247.9M.

Worldwide Spider-Man: No Way Home owns the 3rd best global debut with $587.2M after Avengers: Endgame ($1.22 billion) and Avengers: Infinity War ($640.5M) and that’s without China. Here in the states, box office analytics firm EntTelligence reports that 20M people watched Spider-Man: No Way Home this weekend.

No Way Home‘s Saturday is at $73.8M, which is in the range of where we spotted it last night, the third-best Saturday ever stateside. Sunday is looking at $57.350 million on Sunday from 4,336 locations. The sequel is $4.7M from overtaking Avengers: Infinity War‘s $257.698M opening as the second-best domestic opening of all time.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Is Amazing With $587M+ Global Bow, Snares 3rd Biggest All-Time WW Debut & Sony’s Best Ever – International Box Office

    ZjaK8VDJ9LesQQ22p24VYA.jpg

Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home has become the third biggest global opener of all time with $587.2M. Crossing the $500M mark makes it only the sixth film ever to the milestone in a launch frame. The Jon Watts-directed MCU entry instantly becomes the No. 6 movie of 2021 worldwide (No. 3 for the studios), overtaking all other Marvel pics this year. Topping $500M at open is even more impressive as NWH did it without China, only the second film ever to the five-century mark sans that giant market.

For Sony, this is the biggest opening weekend, ever.

At the international box office, No Way Home grossed $334.2M from 60 markets across five days, landing at No. 7 for the year so far among all titles, and No. 4 for Hollywood.

Holdovers ‘Drive My Car,’ ‘Red Rocket’ Solid In Quiet Arthouse Weekend: Why Did ‘Nightmare Alley’ Go Wide Against ‘Spidey’?

    002_NA_05597-e1639328486184.jpg

Holdovers Drive My Car, Red Rocket, and The Scary Of Sixty-First looked good in limited runs on a weekend with few new specialty releases and even fewer numbers. Streamers – which presented The Lost Daughter (Netflix), Swan Song (Apple), and The Tender Bar (Amazon), don’t reveal them and smaller distributors often report early in the week.

The Novice from IFC — Tribeca winner for best Feature, Actress (Isabelle Fuhrman), and Cinematography (Tod Martin) — grossed an estimated $11,500 in 37 theaters for a per-theater average of $311. Also available on VOD. It was one of the only newbies to report during an unusual weekend with Spider-Man: No Way Home smashing records and sucking up most box office oxygen, and with Covid again resurgent.

As per my colleague Anthony D’Alessandro, researcher NRG says men under 25 – unvaccinated or not — is the most comfortable attending the movies. and most of them were at Spider-Man. That wasn’t good news for Searchlight Pictures’ Nightmare Alley from Guillermo del Toro. Starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, and David Strathairn, it grossed an estimated $3M in 2,145 theaters coming in fifth at the box office (after Spider-Man, Encanto, West Side Story, and Ghostbusters Afterlife.)

“The numbers were a bit more modest than we had predicted,” said Frank Rodriquez, SVP General Sales Manager, Searchlight Pictures. “The hope is that after people have seen Spider-Man, they may choose to see a film like Nightmare Alley.”

“We went wide because we feel that we have a very commercial film, with big stars. We spent some money, and put ourselves out there,” Rodriquez said. “It’s not just arthouse, it really is a four-quadrant film able to play in upscale multiplexes, mainstream locations and even urban markets.”

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Poised To Cross $1B Global On Christmas Day; ‘Venom 2’ Tops $500M – International Box Office

    Venom-in-Spider-Man-No-Way-Home.jpeg

Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home is poised for a very Merry Christmas as the web-slinger is on track to surpass the $1 billion mark globally on Saturday. This would make it the first film of the pandemic era to hit the milestone, as well as the second-fastest title ever at 11 days (tying with Avengers: Infinity War). Avengers: Endgame is the record holder, having done it in five.

Today, the Jon Watts-directed No Way Home is on track to become the top-grossing film of 2021 worldwide, overtaking the two Chinese movies that have been leading the chart for some time.

At the international box office, No Way Home grossed $32.2M on Thursday, bringing its overseas cume to $490.2M and global to $876M going into Friday.

The Top 10 overseas markets through Thursday are the UK ($61.4M), Mexico ($46M), France ($31M), Korea ($29.9M), Brazil ($28.4M), Australia ($28.2M), India ($24.9M), Russia ($23.1M), Germany ($17.2M) and Italy ($17.1M)

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Dashes To $1B+ Global For Pandemic-Era First, Is Top 2021 Title WW – International Box Office

    doctor-strange-dareveil-and-spidermans-in-spider-man-no-way-home-4k-rv.jpg

Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home is having a joyous holiday as it is now officially the first movie of the pandemic era to pass the $1B mark at the global box office. The worldwide gross through Sunday is $1.05B which makes this installment Sony’s No. 2 film of all time, behind only Spider-Man: Far From Home ($1.13B). No Way Home is also the No. 1 title of the year worldwide — and one of the only movies of the modern era to ever reach $1B without China. Simply amazing.

What’s more, the Jon Watts-directed No Way Home got to the mark in just 12 days, ultimately crossing early Sunday rather than Christmas Day as had been anticipated, but at these stratospheric levels — and during a pandemic! — that’s just splitting hairs. No Way Home is the the third-fastest title ever to $1B global, just behind Avengers: Infinity War‘s 11 days. Avengers: Endgame is the record holder, having done it in five.

Disney Claims $1.17B, While Sony Says $1B+: The Conundrum Of The 2021 Domestic Box Office Marketshare

    Box-Office-2021-A-Look-Back.jpg

“Are you really doing a domestic box office market share piece?”

Such is the whine from several studio insiders and corp comms folk.

Of course, we are. Why wouldn’t we? In the best and worst of times, in the published horserace of box office dollars, we still need to know where the studios stand when all the dust settles — even if the pandemic kept business at bay with $4.55 billion for 2021 in U.S. and Canada, below the expected $5.2 billion.

What continues to frustrate many major studio theatrical executives in this annual exercise is how the Disney-Fox merger continues to tip the scales in both a global and domestic box office race.

    maxresdefault.jpg

Disney clearly is counting all of its labels — Disney, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight, and proclaiming itself the winner with $1.17 billion in the U.S./Canada (+180% over 2020) and $2.9 billion global. Stateside that translates into 27% of the $4.55 billion 2021 domestic B.O. year, and the town will just have to deal with that.

Disney’s 20th Century titles — Free Guy, The King’s Man, West Side Story — are handled by the same marketing and distribution team as the big Disney titles, i.e. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, Searchlight, a tad similar to the autonomy that Disney-owned Miramax had back in the day, operates its own marketing and distribution on its theatrical releases. It’s very difficult to exclude 20th Century Studios ticket sales from Disney’s haul, because, c’mon, after Avatar 2 and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, those titles truly will beef up the Burbank lot’s 2022 film revenues.

    Sony_Pictures-Logo.wine.png

However, if we’re going to be purist and weigh domestic box office market share by singular studios, a la before the 2019 merger, and go by the way they’re listed in Comscore, then Sony can arguably win 2021 with $1.059 billion domestic, 54% of that driven by Spider-Man: No Way Home, and also bolstered by Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($212.6M) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife ($122.3M). Sony’s monies account for 23% of the 2021 domestic B.O. That hand beats Disney’s $921.2M driven by Shang-Chi, Black Widow, Eternals, and Jungle Cruise.

Worldwide, Sony files $2.43 billion, behind Disney’s $2.9B.

    1200px-20th_Century_Studios.svg.png

20th Century Studios + Searchlight combined made $245M, repping 5% of the annual domestic B.O., half of that total from Shawn Levy’s Free Guy, the highest-grossing original movie of the year.

Sony deserves a big pat on the back here: They earned their bread off a pure theatrical window, not a day-and-date hybrid like Disney which debuted movies at the same time on Disney+. Perhaps if Disney stuck to theatrical, and didn’t siphon off box office grosses with Raya and the Last Dragon, Cruella, Jungle Cruise, and Black Widow, they’d be looking at a dramatically bigger number from their own branded movies right now. In 2019, Disney, 20th, and Searchlight did $4.25 billion.
