German cable operator Kabel Deutschland (KDG) has announced it has successfully achieved broadband download speeds of up to 1Gbps over its cable TV network.

Conducted in Hamburg in conjunction with technology partner Cisco, the trials were based on the DOCSIS 3.0 standard and were run using a standard commercial Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) from Cisco.

‘It will take a few more years until internet applications and content exists that actually allow our customers to fully utilise as much as 1Gbps. But if you recall that the average demand for bandwidth of a household in the KDG network has increased by 500% from 2006 to 2010 alone, then the question is not if, but when this time will come,’ commented Lorenz Glatz, chief technology officer at KDG, adding: ‘On the one hand, this bandwidth growth is increasingly driven by the continuously rising number of devices with internet connections in customer households.

On the other hand the growing number of internet video offerings are also a strong factor in demand for quantity as well as in picture quality, such as for high-resolution HD videos.’ KDG claims it is the first cableco in the world to successfully run speeds of up to 1Gbps over a cable TV network.

KDG currently offers a top speed of 100 MBPS.

SLT should learn from companies like KDG

KDG is spending money to expand technology & bandwidth

SLT is collecting money from the customers to do what ?

SL government should open the telecom market to other companies
