best place is at the back of the p.c(under the power supply). That way the hot air will be removed from your system.
If you plan to fix it in the front of your casing make sure that you have the same amount of fans in the back of the casing as the front.

Sounds ok but always remember not to more fans in the front than you have in the back.Cause then you are letting more air in to the case than you let out. This can cause over heating.

try to install it to make an effective air flow through the casing. its depends on how you have installed other fans... usually the best way is to take air from the lower front and exhaust from the upper back.. and you can install an exhaust fan on the top of the casing as well..

I found this pic. this is the usual method of installing fans to make the air moving in large quantities.

I have posted a pic as well.. the target is to make a proper air flow thorough the whole casing. If you place both intake and exhaust closer to each other, that will not give a good air flow through the casing. Hot air goes up usually. so you can install the exhaust fans in the upper part of the casing. (usually in the back.) and intake in the lower part (in the front)..

Some good casings like Cooler Master HAF, Vantec 12000 has fans on the top of the casing as well..

If you like to do some hard modifications, get the measurements of the fan and prepare the top to make it possible to mount it as an exhaust (only if you have enough intakes exhaust in the front back and side)
