The 18 bend road between Mahiyanganaya and Kandy (18 වංගුව )
President Mahinda Rajapaksa will open the stretch of road from Udathenna to Mahiyanganaya which is popularly known as the Dahata Wanguwa Para (18 hair-pin bends) on the Kandy- Padiyathalawa via Mahiyanganaya main road (A-26 ) Ports and Highways Deputy Minister Nirmala Kothalawala told the Daily News the stretch of road (41km) has been widened up to 15 metres and carpeted from Udathenna to Mahiyanganaya at a cost of Rs. 4,700 million.This will help ease traffic congestion while reducing the dangerous nature of the road due to its narrowness and precipitous surrounding.
Eight bridges and 320 box culverts have been reconstructed while 37 culverts were widened along the road. Meanwhile, the roadway has been widened to prevent road accidents and made suitable for local weather and geographical conditions."We have constructed a safety fence covering unprotected areas while road markings and traffic signs were properly marked and installed.
Meanwhile, several rest and relaxing spots for exploring the natural beauty of the hills have been established along the road. The 18 hair-pin bends were widened on a special request by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.However, the 18 ancient sharp winding bends will remain even if the road is widened.
The Deputy Minister said that the President has instructed officials to renovate the road without causing any damage to the historical value and natural beauty of the Kandy-Mahiyanganaya road which has a history of over 2,500 years.
