I am not going to justify these taxes. But, we Sri Lankans never pay our fair share of taxes according to taxation laws.
Developed countries charged lots of tax, for example in Australia PAYG tax(income tax) can go as high as 49%, if you having an above average income.
A litre of petrol (petrol is the single highest commodity in Australian household expenditure ) cost less than 50 cents to import/produce/transport, but sell well over $1.25 with all the taxes.
In 1999 election John Howard (then prime minister, asking for a second term in office) said he will introduce a 10% GST if he elected as prime minister for the second time. Well, that means everything in Australia will be 10% more expensive after this GST. But people (including me) vote for him, and make him prime minister to get that 10% GST . (even we have to pay 10% more for everything, we will be gaining lots of other benefits as well)
There are lots of countries in the world, where people who do not honestly pay their taxes, but expect governments to provide them with all the benefits. Recently Greece went in to a recession due to that very same reason.
Governments should not tax their citizens unnecessarily. At the same time citizens should not avoid paying taxes using all the dirty tricks in the book.
When Kosgama army camp exploded, how many businesses said they lost millions and millions due to that disaster?? But if they earning that much, how many businesses declare that income to the inland revenue and paid their taxes?? Only one business, according to my knowledge. None of the others could not prove their income (they may be exaggerating as well ) because they must be avoiding the tax.
I know my comments may not be popular among vast majority, but if you want our country to be a developed country in the future (may not be in next few decades) we all have to share the burden.

If every cent of tax earned money goes to develop the country, people will happily pay their taxes. the actual picture of the country is far beyond you expect. Tax scheme in srilanka couldn't be compared with any other country in the world. You know, tax earned from you at your country goes to the development and public services of your country. But in srilanka, we pay our hard earned money to rob by the politicians. Nothing will be done in srilanka if the politician got nothing from the amount spend for. Large amount of tax earned money goes to luxurious life of the politicians (this happened and happens for decades now).
මිනිස්සු බදු විදියට ගෙවන සල්ලි වලින් රජය රටේ සංවර්ධනයට යටිතල පහසුකම් නඟාසිටුවන්න වියදම් කරනවා නම් මිනිස්සු සතුටින් බදු ගෙවාවි. එ් වුනාට වෙන්නෙ මිනිස්සුන්ගෙන් ගන්න බදු අාදායම දේශපාලකයින්ගෙ සුඛවිහරණයට යොදාගන්න එකයි. එ්ක දැනට අවුරුදු ගානක් ලංකාවෙ සිද්ධ වුන දෙයක්.
පිටරටවල බදු වැඩියි ලංකාවෙ බදු අඩුයි. රට සංවර්ධනය වෙන්නත් බදු අාදායම සංවර්ධිත රටවල වගේ තිබිය යුතුයි කියන අය දැන දැනත් නොදන්නවා වගේ ඉන්න දෙයක් තමයි එ් රටවල මිනිස්සු ගෙවන බදු මුදල් ඉතා සීමිත පිරිසක් සැප විඳින්න යොදා නොගෙන රට වෙනුවෙන් යොදන බවත් ලංකාවෙ සීමිත කොටසක් තමන්ගෙ සැප වෙනුවෙන් රටේ අාදායම යොදාගන්නවා හැරෙන්නට රට වෙනුවෙන් යමක් නොවන බවත්. එ් නිසයි දෙවන ලෝක යුද්දෙ කාලෙ එංගලන්තෙටත් අාධාර දීපු ලංකාව අද වෙද්දි , එ් කාලෙ ලංකාවට වඩා පහළ අාර්ථික මට්ටම් වල හිටපු ජපානෙ වගේ රටවලටත් ණය වෙලා තියෙන්නෙ.
