Generally a "Printer" ( in the sense that the publishing company that does the hard copy print) requires a certain specific standard in the material submitted in electronic form.
That's what they refer to as "Print Ready". Otherwise their editors has to convert the material you give to make it compatible with the commercial printing devices. They will certainly do that but you might get an additional cost charged for this work.
Generally if you submit a pdf document the images should be 300 dpi and the colour space should be four-colour CMYK, unless you require spot colours. If you use spot colours then they should be specified and normally it's done by using Pantone (PMS).
Bleed and Trim marks should be included.
All fonts used in the document must be embedded in the pdf document itself.
All Images and Logos has to be CMYK and preferably in PSD, TIF or EPS.
Papers that are submitted to several Scientific journals now require the above specs, otherwise they don't accept for publication.
