5800 or wait for G2

Hello all

Looking for some advice because I need to change my paltry £10 a month mobile contract that o2 kindly sorted me out with when I was out of work last year. As I'm earning now I really want a decent handset and lots of/unlimited texts.

I've been following Google Android development and like what I see. I'm considering the G2 on Vodafone next month but that's going to £35 at least I would say. Not too keen on that.

An iphone is out because I'm not prepared to pay the premium monthly fees.

Noticed the Nokia 5800 in last few weeks and everything I've read and seen I like. It's affordable on some pretty reasonable contracts, £25 from Vodafone and £25 to £30 for o2. Thinking if I tell o2 I'm leaving for Vodafone they might throw in unlimited web for £30 a month.

My only real concerns with the Nokia is the OS and 3rd party application development with Symbian as opposed to Android and iphone. Seems as though there is strong support for symbian but I'm worried that if I tie myself to an 18 month contract Android or iphone will have far surpassed Symbain capabilites by end of 2010.

Anyone else gone for a Symbian phone recently? What do you think?

Any Android watchers think I'm better off holding off for G2 or one of the Android other handsets which will be landing in the 2nd half of the year?

Thanks in advance everybody

I have a 5800 and I really like its features and battery life. This is my 3rd Nokia smartphone (previously I had a 6110 Navigator and a N73), I always buy Symbian because there are lots of applications for it out there.

The only drawback of 5800 XM is the mediocre camera, but I thought it’s an acceptable compromise between the price and other features. Symbian has been around for almost a decade now, S60 being the most popular edition of them all. You can find a huge number of applications out there, most of them free and others at a fairly reasonable price. Android is still new and I don’t think its application base will surpass Symbian within the next 18 months. Personally I prefer an S60 device over Android right now. But things will change, since google is such a powerful player.

Having said that, most average users don’t install that many 3rd party applications, I consider myself to be an above average Smartphone user, but I only have few IM clients (Fring, eBuddy) a couple of GPS applications (Garmin Mobile XT, GoogleMaps), a browser (Opera Mini) and an Email client (Gmail mobile). I normally don’t play games, so I don’t have any, but there are lots of Symbian games out there if you are interested. As for other features like Music, I think the built in music player is pretty good (can organize music by play lists, artist, genre etc.. , supports album art, custom equalizer settings with special effects and a easy to use interface), whats more 5800 has a dedicated audio processing chip which allows it to play MP3s up to 35hrs!!

I don’t have experience with Android but I have used Windows Mobile phones. and I prefer S60 over WM mainly due to performance.

If you want to buy a phone immediately then get a 5800, but if you are not in a hurry and can wait another 6 months. Then I’d say wait, because phone technology is changing very rapidly now, therefore in 6 months I’m sure you can buy a phone that is twice as better as what you can buy today (e.g : 10MP + camera, high res huge LED touch screen, 32GB+ storage etc..)

It became available in markets only few days ago, I don’t think you can find it in SL yet.

BTW you are basically giving away your email address to spamers by posting it in plain text on a public forum like this.
